Surrey Wildlife Trust and the Dogs Trust urge Dog owners to Keep their pets on Leads this Spring and Summer during Ground-nesting Season

Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) and the Dogs Trust are urging dog owners to do their bit when visiting nature reserves by keeping their pets on leads during ground-nesting season this spring and summer.  SWT is also reminding owners to clean up after their pets – this helps to keep nature reserves in good condition and it helps to protect the health of conservation grazing animals – which are vital for the health of chalk grasslands and heathland sites.

Springtime brings with it the arrival of many migratory species, which travel thousands of miles to breed on nature reserves across the county and are vulnerable to disturbance between March and August.

Keeping dogs close by will help ensure that ground-nesting birds such as Skylarks, Woodcock, and Nightjars are not harmed during the breeding season.  Unsupervised dogs can cause birds to abandon their nests, or can harm chicks, so it’s vital that they are kept under control.

Many dog owners are passionate about nature and want to avoid harming it.  However, even the most well-behaved dogs can unintentionally cause distress or damage wildlife, simply by following their natural curiosity.  Birds perceive dogs as predators and when dogs roam freely, they can cause vitally important nests to fail and put bird populations at risk of decline.

Dog faeces also leach unwelcome nutrients into soil and presents health risks to people and animals, including the cows and sheep that Surrey Wildlife Trust uses to maintain a healthy balance of vegetation on many sites, including Chobham and Whitmoor Commons.

James Herd, Director of Reserves Management at Surrey Wildlife Trust, says:

“We want everyone to enjoy Surrey’s fabulous wild places, and dog walkers with under-control dogs are always welcome on our sites.  But as well as being illegal to disturb nesting birds, it’s good practice to minimise the impact your canine friends have on all wildlife.

“Keeping your dogs under control and making sure you clean up behind them keeps sensitive habitats safe from damaging disturbance and dangerous diseases like Neosporosis, which poses a serious risk of aborted pregnancies in our conservation grazing animals.  Sadly, we’ve seen this twice already in the spring 2025 calving period.”

Dr Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust, says:

“When visiting rural areas, owners should keep their dogs under control and ensure they do not worry other animals or stray from the path, as well as dispose of their dog’s waste appropriately.  We would advise keeping your dog on a short lead, and close to you, especially whenever livestock are nearby.

“It is important to remember that chasing is normal dog behaviour, and that any dog is capable of chasing, irrelevant of breed, type, age or size.  We would encourage owners to explore training options such as the Dogs Trust’s Dog School.”

See www.wildlifetrusts.org/dogs-and-nature for more information about responsible dog walking.

Make a ”Mains to Rains” pledge and water the way nature intended

Have you made your ‘Mains to Rains‘ pledges yet?  The mains2rains website helps us recognise how by adopting a few simple changes in our gardens and allotments, we can all help our gardens and outdoor spaces thrive without using mains water.  We’re encouraging people to collect rainwater and re-use rainwater during dry spells.

What mains2rains pledges could you make?

  • Could you install a water butt to collect rainwater from your roof?
  • How about pledging to place container plants on saucers and trays during spring and summertime?  This small change has a big difference, reducing the need for watering and fertilising, and making watering easier for you during the hottest months of the year.
  • Can you switch to using self-watering containers?  Self-watering containers save water and are easier to manage than traditional containers.
  • Pledge to add a mulch of bark or homemade compost around any new plants you plant.
  • Pledge to plant the right plant in the right place.  For example, plant drought tolerant plants in free-draining sandy soils and moisture loving plants in wetter soils – be sure the plants you plant out are suited to the soil and conditions in your garden or allotment.
  • Can you lift any paving slabs and plant up a flower bed or even sow a lawn instead?
  • Instead of concreting your patio can you use permeable paving?
Have you thought about lifting up some of your paving to create extra planting spaces and allow water to soak into the soil? Photo credit: the Royal Horticultural Society.

See all the pledges on the mains2rains website.  The ‘Mains to Rains’ pledge is part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the Royal Horticultural Society and Cranfield University, part-funded by Innovate UK.  Find more information and make your pledges on the mains2rains website.

Ticket Source – User friendly event ticketing system – by Sarah Wesley from New Society Gardening Club in Camberley

Have you ever thought about how you could sell tickets to your events, or streamline the process you already have?  Then I have to recommend Ticket Source (https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/).

We decided to use it for our club to sell tickets to a talk which we knew would gain lots of local interest and wanted to open up the event to a larger number of attendees.  Planning on 100+ people, how could we sell and manage tickets?

Ticketsource is an online ticket selling site that enables small groups that aren’t charities or businesses to sell tickets which sets it aside from other ticket selling websites.  It is incredibly user friendly and the customer service is absolutely outstanding.

Create the event listing
To set up the event, you just need all the information (date, time, venue, description of event etc) that you enter into the relevant sections.  It is a box filling exercise, due to the easy to use layout of the website.  You can change the colour and set up of the page to add in your logo and have colours to match your branding.

Tickets
Tickets can be set up for different rates – we had a members rate and a guest rate.
To create the members rate I just uploaded an excel spreadsheet of our members names, and contact details and gave them all a membership number (the date of the event as we don’t do membership numbers).  This instantly gave our members access to the discounted rate.  It really was that simple as uploading an excel spreadsheet.

You can set how many tickets you have available to sell, when you’d like them to go on sale from and until.  Have seating plans, if needed, plus so much more.

In house ticket sales
If you would like to give the option to sell tickets at your meetings and collate those names with online sales, you are able to add in in house cash sales to the online listings.  This will then email an online ticket to those who have purchased tickets in house.

Fees
It is free for event organisers to use!  There is an online booking fee (which most people would expect these days).   You can choose to pay this yourselves or pass this onto the person buying the ticket.  We went down the Ticket Source payment processing option, which was 7% fee.  On a £2 ticket this was 30p, on a £10 ticket this was 84p.

Ticketsource hold onto funds until after the event, which in our case when the event was postponed worked out for the best.

If you have a Stripe account then you can get a rate of 4.5% for fees and the funds go straight into the Stripe account.

Reports
There are a selection of reports that can be printed off for finance or front of house for checking people into the event to name a few.  Again these are very simple to understand and use and cover everything you need.

Event change of date
Our worst nightmare happened that after selling 50+ tickets we had to postpone the event by a month.  This website made it so easy, the date change triggers an email sent out to everyone who had purchased tickets (They give an example of what to say, which you can amend).  A full refund (including booking fee) was available to those that could no longer attend the new date, just an email sent to customer service and it was actioned in a few hours.  Even when I got something wrong, customer service were outstanding and it was sorted immediately.

This is a very basic outline of what the website can do, there are so many functions available you can use it at its basic level, like we have done or use it to its full potential, which is shown on the website.

I’ve used other websites for selling tickets for events and I have to say the customer service at Ticketsource is outstanding and the interface on this website is incredibly user friendly I’d definitely use them again.

If you would like to know more about ticketsource then go to https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/ or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah at nsgc_camberley@yahoo.com.

Steve has been perfecting his art for 30 years.  After studying at Hadlow College in Horticulture and Merrist Wood College studying Arboriculture, he spent several years as a highly respected private gardener, tree surgeon, and designer.  In 2005, he joined The Salutation to helm its huge restoration project, setting out a 5-year plan of restoration.  Since 2019, Steve and his partner Louise have been working on their own project “The Land” and have built The No Name Nursery into a sustainable plant nursery in Kent.  Steve also works as a freelance garden consultant.  Steve and Louise will also bring along plants to sell at this meeting.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
