New Speaker Suggestion

Speaker: Peter Frost
Tel: 07732769123
Email: petefrost@hotmail.com
Peter doesn’t charge a fee for speaking.  Instead, he asks you to spend your typical speaker fee on purchasing some of his three books online from Amazon or Waterstones.  Therefore, all the money raised from Peter’s talks goes to the charity, World Vision.  You can give the books to people in your club or society as a freebie.

In terms of equipment, Peter can bring a memory chip with PowerPoint slides.  He would need to borrow a laptop, projector, screen, mic.  If this is difficult, Peter can give a talk from memory or can give a reading from one of his books.

Peter describes himself as a Surrey man, having lived, worked, and played cricket in Egham for many years.  He now lives in Ascot.  Peter is semi-retired, he works in a laboratory from Monday to Wednesday, and volunteers the rest of the week.  He plays the Ukulele for Ascot and Windsor clubs.

Peter’s three books are called “Uncle Chris’s Collection of Crafty Short Stories” volume 1,2,3 (see photo below), which were published over the last 3 years to generate money for the charity World Vision, who give aid to children around the world.  Peter has been a World Vision sponsor for 30 years.  The trigger for writing his books was the Ukraine war.  Peter asks for the money due to him for the books goes to their Ukraine help.  £1500 has now been raised and sent to World Vision (see above).  Peter aims to raise £5000.

All three books are £10 each and are a collection of 15 cosy mystery short stories, with a twist.  The listeners challenge is to “Get the twist before the twist gets you!!”  Each story only takes 10 minutes to read.

Peter has been a speaker at Ascot Rotary, Bracknell Rotary, Reading Rotary and Bracknell Women’s Institute AGM.  At these events Peter hopes to sell a few more books so that he can get to the next target of £5000 for the charity World Vision in their help with Ukraine children.  World Vision have already reached over 1 million Ukraine children, helping with food, blankets, mattresses, generators, and educational help.

In addition, Berkshire Radio and Hampshire’s Fiesta FM have on two separate occasions broadcast Peter reading one of Uncle Chris’s mystery short stories on air.

One of Peter’s stories was long listed recently for the “Mysterious Murder Short Story” competition.  The judges said “A good old-fashioned cosy crime story that packs a heist in under 3000 words, and quite twisty.  It kept me guessing till the end, and I felt I really knew the characters”.

Books are £10 each online from Amazon and Waterstones.  All monies go to the charity.

Beverly Exall BSc, MCIHort, MPGCA will be giving a talk entitled ‘Our Need to Garden – exploring the psychology of why we love to garden’ at the National Vegetable Society’s meeting at St Matthew’s Church in Redhill at 8pm on Wednesday 8th April 2026

Beverly Exall will be the speaker at the National Vegetable Society Surrey District Association‘s meeting at 8pm on Wednesday 8th April 2026 at the Parish Room at St Matthew’s Church, 71 Station Road, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 1DL.

Our Need to Garden – exploring the psychology of why we love to garden.  People who love gardening fulfil their needs through gardening, but what are those needs and how are they fulfilled?  Gain insight into the beliefs, feelings and behaviours that gardeners revealed when interviewed.  Gardening is not just what they do, but who they are.  The research for this talk was conducted on gardeners who grew their own food.

The National Vegetable Society Surrey District Association welcome non-members and guests are very welcome to attend this event – entry is free for National Vegetable Society members, £1 for members of affiliated societies, £2 for RHS Students, and £3 for visitors.

British Trust for Ornithology: Birds in Greenspaces – 1st April to 30th June

Birds in Greenspaces is a new, UK-wide citizen science survey of birds that use our public-access greenspaces. These spaces play many important roles for both birds and people, particularly in urban areas. Public access greenspaces include places like parks, cemeteries, and playing fields, to name a few, meaning a wide range of different habitat on offer.

If we can find out the importance of different greenspaces for birds, and people, we can use the findings to inform management guidance, so that decisions are made that benefit both.

Anyone can take part in Birds in Greenspaces! From 1 April to 30 June, we will be asking you to record the birds in your local greenspace(s). By simply recording which greenspace you visited, how long you spent there, which birds you saw and how many, you will be contributing key data. Whatever your experience level, there are a range of resources to help you to take part and build your skills.

Butterfly Conservation – Garden Butterfly Survey

Record the butterflies that visit your garden including allotments, balconies and community gardens!

Peacock butterfly on Verbena

Butterflies are highly sensitive indicators of the health of the environment and we know many species are declining rapidly.

By counting and identifying the butterflies that visit your survey garden throughout the year, you are sharing essential data that help us understand how they are faring in gardens across the UK.

Importantly, your Garden Butterfly Survey sightings and information about the garden you are surveying will enable us to provide better, evidence-based advice on how to manage gardens to benefit butterflies throughout their life-cycle from egg to adult. Please note this is different to the Big Butterfly Count.

UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS)

Flower-Insect Timed Counts

Help identify how and why pollinator populations are changing and gather data on a wide range of flower-visiting insects.

Hoverfly on fleabane

Spend ten minutes counting pollinators and contribute to a Flower-Insect Timed Count (FIT Count). This simple survey collects data on the total number of insects that visit a particular flower, ideally chosen from our list of 14 target flowers. FIT Counts can be done anywhere, including gardens and parks, in warm, dry weather during daylight hours from 1 April to 30 September.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Thank you to Entomologist, Andrew Halstead for updating us on the Asian Hornet.  Andrew says, “Last year there was a record 162 nests found in England, mainly in the south East around the Channel ports; Ireland and the Scilly Isles also had their first nests.  Some of the English nests were not found before they had time to produce and release next years queens.  Together with queens hitching a ride on cross-Channel transport, 2026 is likely to be another busy year for the Defra staff that currently deal with reported sightings.  Sooner or later it is likely that Defra will decide that Asian hornet is now here to stay and they will withdraw support from the eradication programme.  We will then be in the same situation as France and other European countries where AH is well established.  An Asian hornet nest is estimated to consume about 11.5kg of insects during the summer-autumn, so the impact on bees and other insects will be considerable.  Many beekeepers in France have abandoned beekeeping because of much reduced honey crops and the difficulty of protecting hives.  The same will happen here.

Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
