Additionally, please do let your members know that if they ever have any gardening questions, they can reach out to the Sunday Gardening programme via email Sunday.gardening@bbc.co.uk or call the team from 10am on Sundays on 0800 587 1046.  The Sunday Gardening programme are joined every week by a gardening expert who is ready to answer any question you may have.

Entomologist Andrew Halstead Suggests Something to Look Out for – the White-shouldered shieldbug

Thank you to Vasyl Hleba for allowing us to use his photo.

Britain has about 18 species of shieldbugs in the Pentatomidae family, plus a number of non-native species that have come into this country.  A relatively recent arrival is the White-shouldered shieldbug (Dyroderes umbraculatus).  It was first found here in 2013 at Perivale Woods in West London but is now much more widespread.  It has been found recently in Woking and is likely to be seen elsewhere in Surrey.

The White-shouldered shieldbug (Dyroderes umbraculatus) is superficially similar to the Hairy shieldbug (Dolycoris baccarum), but at 7mm long, it is only half the size of the latter.  As the common name of D. umbraculatus indicates, it has a pair of distinctive white patches behind the insect’s head.  The White-shouldered shieldbug will not become a garden pest as it feeds by sucking sap from the foliage and developing seeds of goosegrass, (Galium aparine) and related wildflowers known as bedstraws.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Thank you to Entomologist, Andrew Halstead for updating us on the Asian Hornet.  Andrew says, “Last year there was a record 162 nests found in England, mainly in the south East around the Channel ports; Ireland and the Scilly Isles also had their first nests.  Some of the English nests were not found before they had time to produce and release next years queens.  Together with queens hitching a ride on cross-Channel transport, 2026 is likely to be another busy year for the Defra staff that currently deal with reported sightings.  Sooner or later it is likely that Defra will decide that Asian hornet is now here to stay and they will withdraw support from the eradication programme.  We will then be in the same situation as France and other European countries where AH is well established.  An Asian hornet nest is estimated to consume about 11.5kg of insects during the summer-autumn, so the impact on bees and other insects will be considerable.  Many beekeepers in France have abandoned beekeeping because of much reduced honey crops and the difficulty of protecting hives.  The same will happen here.

Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
