The Surrey Horticultural Federation Inter-Club Quiz and AGM

We hope you’ll join us for the SURREY HORTICULTURAL FEDERATION INTER-CLUB QUIZ & A.G.M
on SUNDAY 2nd November 2025 at 2.30pm
at East Horsley Village Hall, Kingston Avenue, East Horsley, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT24 6QT.

We hope to have a very quick AGM (Agenda follows) and then on with the Quiz.  NB: Please recruit up to three club members for a team table.

Our quiz is a fun and relaxed event – no one has to stand up or read out their answers.  Three representatives from each club form a team.  Teams sit together; each member has their own sheet of paper to record their answers.  Teams can confer and all answers are filled in on quiz sheets.  Our Quizmaster, John Negus reads out the questions and gives a multiple choice of answers for participants to choose from – it’s rather like ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’.   You can guess if you’re not sure of the answer, and teams can confer.  If one team member knows the answer you can all choose the same and pick up maximum points, or you can all choose different answers if you wish.

Team supporters and visitors from any club are welcome to attend – there are cash prizes for teams and prizes for the best answers from the audience!  The Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz is a relaxed and fun afternoon – we hope you’ll join us.

Nurture Landscape in Windlesham would like to Donate a large number of Unused Seed Pots and Trays to a Local Gardening Club, Charity, or Community Group

Nurture Landscapes in Windlesham would like to donate several thousand pots, plus associated trays.  The pots are quite small, each tray holds 8 pots in a 4×2 configuration.  These unused seed pots and trays could really help a local Gardening Club, Charity, or Community Group.  Phil Davies from Nature Landscapes would be happy to arrange delivery of the pots and trays to a destination or you could arrange a collection from their yard in Windesham.  Phil is happy to drop off at a couple of locations (fewer than 5) but naturally he’s unable to be running around Surrey making dozens of drop-offs.  Alternatively, pots and trays can be collected from Phil at Windlesham over the next couple of weeks.  If you’re interested, please email Phil asap to make arrangements, his email is phil.davies@nurturelandscapes.co.uk.

A Message from Jean Griffin:

Hello to all Societies I had to cancel/postpone over the past and forthcoming weeks, I am so sorry to let you down but it cannot be helped.  This was due to an accident on August 24th, when I was knocked over by an out-of-control dog.  I suffered multiple muscle tears, twisted knees and a shoulder injury.  I am stuck at home, totally frustrated as cannot start putting my garden to bed as I’m unable to stand or walk without a frame!   Not looking for sympathy but I am sending a request to all dog owners to teach recall and control to your animal before this happens to someone else!  Thank you all for being understanding.  I hope to see you all next year!  Jean Griffin

Squire’s Garden Centres’ celebrate World Smile Day on the 3rd October 2025!

A look at the Cyclamen crop at Squire’s nursery in West Sussex in anticipation of Squire’s Festival of Cyclamen.

It’s World Smile Day on Friday 3rd October 2025.  To celebrate, the first 100 paying customers visiting each of Squire’s Garden Centres on this day will receive a free cyclamen – a fitting gift for a day dedicated to spreading happiness, with a plant that symbolises love, sincerity and empathy.

Squire’s Garden Centres’ Festival of Cyclamen runs from 1st October 2025 until the 19th October 2025

Squire’s Garden Centres’ inaugural Festival of Cyclamen showcases a dazzling array of outdoor cyclamen – all grown in peat-free growing media at Squire’s own nursery in West Sussex – offering bursts of colour to brighten gardens, patios and containers.

Cyclamen are synonymous for their delicate, heart-shaped leaves and flowers that dance gracefully bringing vibrancy and charm just as many summer plants begin to fade.  These plants are usually able to cope with a light frost.  Cyclamen thrive in cool conditions and will flower right through autumn and into the winter months.

Cyclamen ‘Petit Moulin’.

The festival introduces new varieties, including Cyclamen ‘Petit Moulin’, developed for its fragrance and long-lasting, double blooms and Cyclamen ‘Amaze Me’, a hardy star that can return year after year.  In total, Squire’s will showcase 12 varieties, each offering something special – from frilled petals to striking bi-colours and silvery marbled foliage.

Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: “Cyclamen are such a joyful plant – they arrive in autumn just when we need colour and cheer the most, as the days begin to shorten and gardens can become more muted.  It’s wonderful to celebrate their beauty through our Festival of Cyclamen and to share their uplifting qualities with our customers. We are particularly proud that all of the plants in the Festival are grown at our own nursery in West Sussex, continuing our commitment to supporting British horticulture.  We hope that whether in gardens, pots or on patios, these charming plants bring a smile to many this season.”

Peter Titmuss, overseeing this year’s Cyclamen crop at Squire’s nursery in West Sussex.

The Festival of Cyclamen runs until 19 October 2025 at all Squire’s Garden Centres. Visit your local centre to discover the collection and find the perfect Cyclamen to brighten autumn.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.
