Janet’s report on the Surrey Horticultural Federation’s Spring Talk with Speaker, Award-winning Garden Designer, Ann-Marie Powell

On Tuesday 18th March 2025, members of many clubs within the Surrey Horticultural Federation came to Normandy Hall to listen to the award-winning Chelsea designer, Ann-Marie Powell talk about her life, work, and her ‘Passion for Plants’.

Unusually for a Garden Designer, Ann-Marie grew up without a garden because her father was in the army, but her grandfather was a miner who had an allotment, which not only supplemented his family table but also gave him a deep connection with light and sunshine which he passed on to Ann Marie.

When she was in her early twenties, Ann-Marie went travelling and visited India, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand and Central America.  That’s when she saw the beautiful textures, fabrics and colours that nature puts together in a living landscape.  When Ann-Marie came back from travelling, she enrolled at Capel Manor College in Enfield and after completing her studies, Ann-Marie graduated with a distinction in Garden Design & Hard Landscape Studies.  In 1999, she started her own design company and is now listed as one of the Top 50 Landscape and Garden Designers.

Her company has three main concepts, be Bold, Vibrant, and BioDiverse.  Ann-Marie showed us slides of her favourite colour combinations, purple and orange, plus a bright pink, and many of her designs showed bold swathes of these colours.  Other gardens had meadows of white carrot flowers, with big clumps of feathery fennel plants.  Ann-Marie has been exploring various ways of creating wild flower gardens, from seed, to water-seeding and meadow turf, and she showed a selection of these with different colour combinations.  Another garden had a large corner composed mostly of grasses and iris, with wooden steps going from an old orchard planting to a summer house in the corner.  By using such a wide range of colours and plants, and a pond if possible, her gardens attract many insects and animals, thus increasing pollination.  The new Hilltop Vegetable gardens at Wisley show other examples of Ann-Marie’s work, with edible flowers growing amongst colourful vegetables.

Last year, Ann-Marie Powell designed the Octavia Hill Garden with the National Trust, which won Silver Gilt, the Children’s Choice Award, and the coveted BBC’s People’s Choice Award.  Now she is working on huge beds at Hampton Palace, with permanent colourful planting to replace the annual bedding plants usually used there, so there will be a lot more of her designs to see in future!  Her motto is ‘be brave and go for it’!

The audience really enjoyed the talk, and there have been several nice comments already.  Is there a speaker you would like to hear?  Please let Beth (email Beth: beth@pumpkinbeth.com) know and we will see whether they are available for 2026.

Butterfly Conservation: 2024 officially one of the worst years on record for UK butterflies

  • More than half of UK butterfly species are now in long-term decline for the first time on record
  • Small Tortoiseshell had its worst year ever and is in long-term decline
  • Common butterflies that live in gardens, parks and the wider countryside had their second-worst year since 1976
  • 51 of the UK’s 59 species declined in 2024 compared to 2023

Newly released data has shown that 2024 was one of the worst years on record for butterflies in the UK and, for the first time on record, more than half of butterfly species in the UK are now in long-term decline.

Nine species had their worst year since counting began, including the much-loved Small Tortoiseshell, Chalk Hill Blue and Small Copper.

Worryingly, last year was also the second-worst year on record for ‘wider countryside species’ – the common butterflies that live in gardens, parks and across the landscape such as Common Blue, Gatekeeper and Large White.

The figures come from the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) which has asked volunteers to count butterflies across the country since 1976 and now monitors more than 3,000 sites. The scheme is led by national charity Butterfly Conservation, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

Overall, 2024 was the fifth worst year since records began for UK butterflies. Butterfly numbers always fluctuate annually, and last year’s low numbers are partly the result of a wet spring and relatively cool summer, however UKBMS data also show that 31 of the 59 resident UK species are now in long-term decline.

Dr Richard Fox, Head of Science at Butterfly Conservation, said: “I am devastated by the decline of our beloved British butterflies, and I’m sorry to say it has been brought about by human actions: we have destroyed wildlife habitats, polluted the environment, used pesticides on an industrial scale and we are changing the climate.

“That means that when we have poor weather, these already-depleted butterfly populations are highly vulnerable and can’t bounce back like they once did – and with climate change, that unusual weather is becoming more and more usual.”

In total, 51 of the UK’s 59 species declined in 2024 compared to 2023, with just six species showing any increase.

Among the most concerning species is the Small Tortoiseshell: one of the most well-known butterflies in the UK, its bright colours and appearance in gardens have made it a recognisable favourite.

However, since the first UKBMS results in 1976, its abundance has plummeted by 86%. Numbers in 2023 were the worst ever at that point, and last year were down again.

Unlike many of the species that are faring worst, the Small Tortoiseshell is not a rarity confined to nature reserves but a ‘wider countryside species’, living in all parts of the UK and drinking nectar from a wide variety of flowers. Its caterpillars feed on stinging nettles.

Of the eight other species that had their worst year on record, Green-veined White, Small Skipper, Large Skipper and Small Copper are also wider countryside species.

The Green-veined White, one of the UK’s most widespread butterflies, is also now in significant long-term decline.

The Grizzled Skipper, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Chalk Hill Blue, which also had their worst year on record, are already listed as threatened on the GB butterfly Red List.

These species all require specific habitat to thrive, and those habitats have been destroyed over the past century.

Dr Marc Botham, Butterfly Ecologist at the UKCEH, said: “These deeply concerning results from the UKBMS emphasise just how important it is to monitor and record our wildlife so we can target conservation efforts and protect our beloved species. Butterflies in particular are valuable not just in their own right but also as indicator species, meaning they can tell us about the health of the wider environment, which makes the UKBMS data invaluable in assessing the health of our countryside and natural world in general.”

The UKBMS figures come after Butterfly Conservation declared a UK-wide Butterfly Emergency following the worst-ever results of its Big Butterfly Count last year.

Dr Fox said: “Most people will not be surprised by these results: all last summer we were inundated with people asking where the butterflies had gone and what they can do to help.

“By far the best thing we can do to help butterflies is to create more habitat. Last year we published research which showed that letting parts of your garden grow wild with long grass increases the number and variety of butterflies that you see. That is why we are calling on people and councils across the UK to pledge to not cut their grass this year from April to September: this simple act can make a real, immediate difference to butterflies, moths and other wildlife.”

Dr James Heywood, Bird Survey Organiser at BTO said: “We are incredibly grateful to the thousands of skilled volunteers who monitored butterflies last year at more than 3,000 sites as part of the UKBMS, as well the 300 volunteers who are recording both birds and butterflies at the same locations. The collective data, which reveal a concerning picture for so many species, will help to inform lasting, impactful conservation decisions. We will continue to support and encourage these brilliant citizen scientists to contribute to this scheme and ensure a better future for our amazing British wildlife.”

Steve Wilkinson, Director of Ecosystem Evidence & Advice at JNCC, said: “The results revealed by the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme highlights why robust wildlife monitoring is absolutely essential for conservation. Without the dedicated efforts of thousands of volunteers tracking butterfly numbers, we wouldn’t fully understand the scale of this decline. This comprehensive surveillance allows us to identify which species need urgent intervention, track long-term trends, and measure the effectiveness of our conservation efforts. The UKBMS data doesn’t just tell us about butterflies – it provides a critical indicator of the health of our wider environment. In the face of habitat loss and climate change, these monitoring schemes provide the evidence base we need to take meaningful action before it’s too late.”

The modernist White House (rare Grade II* listing) was built in 1933.  The formal gardens remain true to the original.  There are flat lawns surrounded by modernist rectangular beds; the sculptural concrete driveway island links to a wildlife pool encased by a concrete pagoda.

Near the Wheatsheaf, down a small lane is Little Hollow.  The garden reflects the artist owner’s creativity and gardening know how.  Behind the house is a large patio edged with glorious beds.  The studio lies alongside a large pond with a water feature, beyond is a lovely view across the woodland.

Along Lower Road is the AppArt Sculpture Garden.  It has espalier and fan fruit trees, raised vegetable beds, and a bright red pergola festooned with roses and clematis.  The sculptures are added to each year and make wonderful features.

Along The Klondyke is No. 3.  This small garden packs a big punch!  Careful design blends with a riot of planting among far eastern artefacts – it’s truly a one off.

Opening for the first time for Grayswood Open Gardens is the Manor House, 3 Gates Lane.  Set in 6 acres with fine views, an impressive show of azaleas and wisteria; water gardens and a magnificent rose garden.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
