  2. The 2023 Minutes were circulated and read, proposed by Sarah Wilson, seconded by David Woodall then signed.
  3. Matters Arising. There were none.
  1. Yearly Report. Janet read her report for 2024, as follows:-

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

This Spring we were pleased to host Nick Hamilton, son of the late Geoff Hamilton, with his talk about his family and Barnsdale Gardens. Nick talked about how the garden had come into his family and how it had progressed through the years when the BBC filmed there, and what has happened since.  I think we would have liked to seen a bit more of the planting, but it was an interesting talk.

Sadly this year we didn’t manage to find that ‘special’ garden to visit, despite investigating several possibilities.  The problem is often parking, and whether the garden is open to other visitors or the National Gardens Scheme – please let me know of somewhere you think other members would like.

I would like to mention how many garden events and shows Beth has managed to find to put into the Newsletters over the past year – she has done a wonderful job and the photos have looked great.   I am only too sorry she is unable to join us on these occasions, but would like to thank her for all her hard work in keeping us in touch with one another.

I would also like to thank the President and all the committee for all their support over the past year, particularly Kathy for dealing with the Membership, the accounts, and sending out tickets for our talks.  Kathy has suggested that we have a specific Surrey Horticultural Federation email address, which I think is a good idea and hope you will agree.  If you would like to join the Council please let us know when we come to the elections – we would love some younger members and it’s only a year at a time.

  1. Treasurers Report.

A copy of the accounts for the past year was circulated. The Federation currently has £8,782.65 in hand.

Income for the year was £1,177.00 made up of subscriptions and donations from clubs and the AGM/Quiz raffle. Expenditure was £519.36 made up of affiliation fees, quiz costs, judges & lecturers lists, hall hire, insurance and newsletter/secretary expenses. This resulted in a surplus of £657.64.

This year’s Spring talk was by Nick Hamilton. The surplus of £183.60 was released from the reserve at the end of September 2024.  The overall net result for the year was a surplus of £841.24 (£657.64 + £183.60).

We were delighted to welcome 4 new member clubs during the year and had a total of 88 member clubs in 2024 and we propose to keep subscriptions unchanged at £10 yet again for 2025 (this has been kept for over 20 years now!).  Katharine then gave her thanks to auditor John Manches for examining the books.

The Chairman called for a proposer for the Report – Barbara Boyse, and a seconder – Anne Bradbeer and all agreed.

  1. Election of High Officers and Council Members.

President Daphne Foulsham said that after the change in high officers in 2021, the three positions of Chairperson, Janet Arm, Treasurer/Membership Secretary, Kathy Deaville, and Webmaster/Events Secretary Beth Otway had come to an end and all three were due for re-election, and had agreed they would stay on.  She said it was a pity that Beth was unable to attend any meetings, but thanked her in her absence for the work she does.

Voting was as follows:  Janet Arm (Chairperson) Proposed David Woodall, Seconder Patricia Barrett      All agreed.

Katharine Deaville (Treasurer) Proposed: Nicky Cornell, Seconded: Pat Coles     All agreed

Beth Otway (Website and Events Secretary) Proposed: Anne Bradbeer, Seconded Nicky Cornell. Agreed,

Council Members stand for a single year at a time. They are Anne Bradbeer, Barbara Boyse, Nicky Cornell, Roy Lomax, Pam Lomax, John Negus, Jane Swift, and Paul Yeoman who had all agree to stand again for a further year. These were proposed en-bloc by Janet Arm, seconded by Kathy Deaville, and agreed by all.

  1. Future Events, by Janet.

This year we are lucky enough that Beth has booked Ann-Marie Powell for our Spring Talk at 7.30pm on Tuesday 18th March 2025 which we have confirmed is booked at Normandy Village Hall as East Horsley wasn’t available.  Tickets are available here today for this talk.

Ann-Marie is a multi-award winning garden designer, television presenter, journalist and author, who divides her time between designing innovative gardens for private clients, companies and charities, and enthusing people about gardening through her books, television appearances and articles in national newspapers and magazines.

Listed as one of the Top 50 Landscape and Garden Designers for five years in a row by House and Gardens, Ann-Marie and her studio have won a host of Awards. In 2024 she designed the Main Avenue Show Garden at RHS Chelsea 2024, which won Silver Gilt, Children’s Choice Award and BBC’s People’s Choice Award.

Ann-Marie’s articles have featured in national and international publications as diverse as The English Garden, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Times, House Beautiful and Gardens Illustrated. Her natural wit combined with down to earth advice and ‘can do’ style is much in demand by editors and readers alike.

Her talk to us will be her latest one, which is called ‘A Passion for Plants’.  NB: Tickets will be available soon, please check the Surrey Horticultural Federation website and newsletters for details.

I do hope you will be able to come, but please note this is an evening talk (she doesn’t do weekends) and as last year, we will not be serving teas, so please bring a drink with you if you need one.  We never know quite how long the speaker will talk for, or how many questions afterwards – to add teas usually takes up an extra half an hour plus clearing up afterwards which means that it can be quite late before we finish.

As I said earlier, I do hope that we will manage to find someone who is prepared to open their garden for SHF members and who aren’t already open to others!  If you know of a garden that would fit the bill, please let me know.  It would be lovely to have one nearer the centre or the east of Surrey – but so far no-one has come up with an idea.  Could I ask who has been to Dunsborough Park Gardens at Ripley – I hear their Tulip Festival is fantastic – but if we wanted a special day I think we would have to have confirmed bookings and in the past we have never known just how many will turn up to a garden.  (Several members present said they had already been.)

I am really sorry that we haven’t got as many teams for our quiz today, (probably everyone is trying to avoid the Wisley area) but I hope those of you who have not competed before enjoy the experience! In case you haven’t been before I thought I would just run through the way it works. (Brief description given.)

So, it’s on with the quiz, and good luck everyone.

  1. Any other business. It was suggested that the next Quiz and AGM should be held at that venue as it was easier to reach from the more easterly clubs. The talk will for now still be held at Normandy Hall as it is the largest in the area.

Inter Club Quiz.

After the AGM 7 teams took part in the quiz with Quizmaster John Negus.  It was a close fought contest, with most clubs scoring well, and ended with a win for Hardy Plant Society Team 1, in second place were Tilford, and in third place Worplesdon.  The final scores were as follows:-

NAME OF ASSOCIATION Total Position Prize
Hardy Plant Society Southern Counties – Team 1 56 1st £30
Tilford Gardening club 50 2nd £20
Worplesdon Gardening Club 48 3rd £10
Hardy Plant Society Southern Counties – Team 2 47
Surrey Gardens Trust 46
Thursley Garden Club 45
Jacobs Well     32

The President presented the Quiz Trophy and cheques to winners and runners-up, and audience prizes were handed out.  Thanks were given to all those teams and council members who kindly brought along raffle prizes.

The Therapy Garden are Looking for Volunteers

The Therapy Garden works to have a positive and significant impact on the lives of people facing challenges in life.  Whether by giving a sense of purpose to children with special needs, or reducing the isolation of a young person living with autism, or someone older living with dementia; building confidence in adults recovering from a stroke, or by helping to equip young people who have additional learning needs for a possible future in the workplace.  The Therapy Garden aim to change lives for the better and they do this by creating a safe place to enjoy the power of gardening and to connect with nature.

The Therapy Garden are open to their clients five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 9.15am until 2.30pm.  Their adult clients attend all year round, but teenagers only attend during school term times.

The charity is able to fund only about 50% of its costs from fee paying clients and has to raise the rest from donations and fundraising.

Do you have 5 hours a week to help people with challenges in their lives?

  • Join the Therapy Garden’s committed team of volunteers and support students and adult clients with gardening activities.
  • Help the Therapy Garden maintain their beautiful and tranquil garden.

Volunteer roles

  • The Therapy Garden are looking for volunteer horticulturalist support workers to assist in the Garden alongside their horticulturists in the supervision of adult clients and teenagers with a variety of disabilities.
  • Volunteers work in the garden with clients, helping them with various tasks such as planting, harvesting, pruning, mowing, and more; under the guidance of our team of horticulturists.
  • As well as general gardening work, volunteers assist the Therapy Garden’s clients – both children and adults – with the opportunity to achieve a qualification in horticulture.
  • Other tasks the Therapy Garden’s volunteers help with include general garden maintenance, DIY tasks, craft, and cookery activities.
  • No gardening experience is required, just the ability to get along with others and muck in!
  • Volunteering at the Therapy Garden can be a great stepping stone to further education or work opportunities.
  • At present, the Therapy Garden are looking for Volunteers who can offer a regular weekly commitment.

Mark Gregory will be giving a talk about Designing and Building a Chelsea Show Garden to New Society Gardening Club on Thursday 16th January 2025

New Society Gardening Club are hosting a very special event where award-winning garden designer, Mark Gregory will share his insights on designing and building a Chelsea Show Garden.  Learn from Mark’s experiences and be inspired to create your own stunning outdoor space!  Mark will be talking about how he built the Savills Plot to Plate Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.  This garden pushed a lot of boundaries on the sustainability front, by removing all cements and discovering lots of new and old techniques that have long been forgotten.

This in-person event is a must-attend for anyone passionate about gardening and landscaping.  Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry!  As a designer, constructor, lecturer, mentor, judge, ambassador and managing director, Mark Gregory has been at the forefront of horticulture and landscaping for 35 years.

Mark Gregory was educated at Askham Bryan Horticultural College, trained at RHS Wisley, a Fellow of the Landscape Institute and a Chartered Landscape Architect.  Mark has spent his life designing and creating gardens.  In 2023 he was awarded the RHS Associate Of Honour, an award held for life which recognises his unique distinguished service to the practice of horticulture during his career.  In 2022, Mark was the recipient of the Pearson Memorial Medal for outstanding service to the garden industry and he also became the RHS Ambassador for Landscapers.  In 2017 and again in 2022, Mark was voted the Most Influential Person in the garden and landscape industry by his peers.  Mark has built more RHS show gardens and has received more medals than any other constructor.

Mark hasn’t missed a Chelsea Flower Show since he started in 1989.  Even when Covid cancelled the 2020 show, Mark was awarded Garden Of The Decade for his Welcome To Yorkshire Garden which captured a slice of Wensleydale at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018.  This design celebrated Yorkshire’s stunning scenery, natural materials, traditional crafts, and artisan food production.  Celebrating quintessential buttercup meadows and rich flora, this show garden was set on the edge of a woodland and featured a tumbling beck running past a stone bothy into soft pastures.  Who can forget Mark’s audacious 2019 Chelsea Flower Show design, which incorporated a pair of canal lock gates, a lock keeper’s lodge with private garden and vegetable patch with a towpath running next to a perennial meadow?

For RHS Chelsea 2023, Mark created his most complex build, The Savills Garden.  This garden invited us into an intimate walled sanctuary with an abundance of beautiful ornamental and edible planting.  At the heart of the garden was a working kitchen and adjoining dining area where Chelsea Pensioners enjoyed meals prepared with ingredients from the potager and walled garden – a true ‘plot to plate’ experience.  Mark’s genuinely sustainable and environmentally sensitive design featured reclaimed hard landscaping materials; brick, pantiles, Yorkshire flagstone and cement-free concrete.  Mark’s whole ethos was to build the garden in as sustainable manner possible and push boundaries.  The garden lives on at a residential centre in Nottinghamshire, where it is used to teach cookery skills to young people.

This event will be held at St Paul’s Church, Camberley, Surrey, GU15 2AD.
Doors open at 7pm, the meeting will start at 7.45pm.  The talk will last approximately 1 hour.

Tickets for this event are:

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.
