Roy Lomax Obituary by Janet Arm

Roy Lomax with some of his prize-winning daffodils at the Mid Southern Daffodil Show.

I first met Roy and Pam at a Surrey Horticultural Federation meeting in 2003, when it looked like the group might fold.  They both volunteered to join the council, and so did I, so starting a long- lasting friendship.  They had actually worked for the Federation before this date, when we used to have shows and meetings in the main hall at Merrist Wood College, helping as always with teas and raffles.  Since 2003 they continued to be on the committee, and rarely missed a meeting, Roy standing in as Chairman when necessary.  Their input to the Federation has been outstanding, and we were all only too sorry when Roy’s health deteriorated and they finally decided to retire from the council at this year’s AGM.

Roy was very proud of the daffodils he entered into the Mid Southern Daffodil Group Show at Cobham Hall in Surrey.

Asking Pam about their earlier life, Roy had worked with his father looking after a prize -winning herd of Guernsey cattle on a farm owned by Lord and Lady Swaythling, and the garden has now become Townhill Park.  During the war Roy moved up to Wraysbury, and actually used to mow some of the grass for what is now Heathrow airport!  After another couple of moves he met Pam at a Youth Club, and they became engaged for 4 years while he served in the RAF in Malaya, and when he returned they married and lived in Mayford for their married life – all 67 years of it!

Roy and Pam Lomax.

Pam (who’s father worked for what was Jackmans’s Garden Centre) introduced Roy to horticulture and he became an excellent grower, belonging to several clubs, including Jacobs Well (where he was Chairman for a while), Surrey Chrysanthmum and Dahlia, and Mid Southern Daffodil.   He used to compete in all of these shows, usually coming away with lots of prizes, even at the highest level.

Roy Lomax‘s funeral is on Monday 22nd December 2025 at 3pm at Woking Crematorium, Hermitage Road, St John’s, Woking, GU21 8TJ.  Afterwards at Mayford Village Hall, Saunders Lane, GU22 ONN.  I am sure that everyone in the Surrey Federation who knew Roy would wish to send their condolences to Pam and their family. We will miss him.

SURREY GUILD OF HORTICULTURAL JUDGES AND LECTURERS

WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN, OR CAN YOU HELP?

Wondering what to do with your spare time?  Perhaps you are a talented exhibitor who would like to actually become a judge – becoming a trainee under a senior judge for approximately 2 years with no actual exams involved – or maybe you have some wonderful photos of your garden or places you have seen on your travels and you would like to give talks to gardening clubs.  You can choose your own area to cover, and lecturers choose when they would like to work, i.e. afternoons and/or evenings, and set their own charges.  The cost of belonging to the Surrey Guild of Horticultural Judges and Lecturers is only £7 a year (plus £5 the first year – for the guild badge) and for this your name is circulated to all clubs within the Surrey Horticultural Federation plus a few other organisations.

We currently have 45 members, but In order to keep this guild going we need new members, especially new committee members.  We are currently looking for a new Chairperson and a Treasurer, so if you have financial skills or can run a website, we would love to hear from you.

We meet once a year for an AGM (currently at Chiddingfold in March) and a couple of other committee meetings a year (usually in a member’s house).  All secretarial work is done by Fiona Jackman and she can give you further details of what the posts involve.  Nothing is set in stone – fresh ideas are always welcome, so please contact Fiona – email fionasjackman@gmail.com or telephone 01243-551501.

SURREY HORTICULTURAL FEDERATION 49th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Minutes of the Meeting held at 2.30 pm, Sunday 2nd November 2025 at East Horsley Village Hall.

Present:-  Chairperson Janet Arm, Treasurer/Membership Secretary Katharine Deaville, Quizmaster John Negus, and Council Members: Nicky Cornell, Barbara Boyse, and Paul Yeoman.

Club Representatives:  As well as the above there were a total of 29 club members present, representing the clubs:-  Albury Produce, Hardy Plant (Southern Counties) Society, Lightwater, Merstham, Nutfield, Plant Heritage (Surrey),  Thursley, Tilford, and Worplesdon.

Chairperson Janet Arm gave a welcome to all members who had managed to get to the hall despite the A3 and other roads being closed, and explained that President Daphne Foulsham had recently had a back operation and although recovering well was not able to come to the meeting.  A small gift was being sent to Daphne from the council.

Janet also apologised for the lack of a microphone as the hall had not replied to our attempts to contact them.

  1. Apologies for absence: President Daphne Foulsham, Vice President Richard Tabot, Beth Otway, Anne Bradbeer, Jane Swift, Pam and Roy Lomax and David Woodall.
  2. The 2024 Minutes were circulated, read and agreed by all.
  3. Matters Arising. There were none.
  4. Chairperson’s Report.

Janet read her report for 2025, as follows:

In March we were pleased to host award winning Chelsea designer, Ann-Marie Powell and hear her talk about her life and work, and her ‘Passion for Plants’.

Ann-Marie’s company has three main concepts, Be Bold, Vibrant and BioDiverse, and she showed us slides of her favourite colour combinations, Purple and Orange, plus a bright pink, and many of her designs showed bold swathes of these colours.  Ann-Marie has been exploring various ways of creating wild flower gardens, and showed a selection of these with different colour combinations.  By using a wide range of colours and plants, and a pond if possible, her gardens attract many insects and animals, thus increasing pollination.  The new Hilltop World Food and Wildlife gardens at RHS Wisley show other examples of her work, with edible flowers growing amongst colourful vegetables.  Her motto is ‘be brave and go for it’!  The audience really enjoyed the talk, and it is a pity that she doesn’t give daytime or weekend talks as we think there would have been even more who would have liked to come.

Then on a very hot day in June we were lucky enough to visit Lower House, Bowlhead Green, This garden was reconstructed from some old Gertrude Jekyll plans and the current head gardener (who is here today!) took members round the garden before we had tea and cakes in the orchard. I think this was a fortunate visit as I believe the owner has decided not to open her garden again – she has done so for 19 years and it is a lot of work.   Perhaps one day we will find a suitable garden in the east of the county so that more members can come – anyone any ideas?

I would like to mention how many garden events and shows Beth has managed to find to put into the Newsletters over the past year – she has done a wonderful job and the photos have been great.   I am only too sorry she is unable to join us on these occasions, but would like to thank her for all her hard work in keeping us in touch with one another.

I would also like to thank the President and all the committee for all their support over the past year, particularly Kathy for dealing with the Membership, the accounts, and tickets for our talks.  We do now have a specific Surrey Federation email address so that you can contact either Kathy, Beth, or me.

Thanks everyone for your support – I wish there were more of you here today, after all we do currently have 82.clubs within the Federation, and the subscription of £10 a year hasn’t been changed in the 20 or so years I have been involved – what a bargain!

  1. Treasurers Report.

Katharine read her report for 2025 as follows:

The Federation currently has £9,065.97 in hand.

Income for the year was £1,007.00 made up of subscriptions and donations from clubs and the AGM/Quiz raffle.

We were delighted to welcome 3 new member clubs during the year, six clubs rejoined, but we sadly bade farewell to another 3 clubs who closed their doors this year.   The Federation had a total of 82 member clubs in 2025.

Expenditure was £302.60 made up of affiliation fees, quiz costs, hall hire, insurance and newsletter/secretary expenses.  This resulted in a surplus of £704.40.

This year’s Spring talk was by Ann-Marie Powell and was an evening talk.  The loss of £421.08 was released from the reserve at the end of September 2025.

The overall net result for the year was a surplus of £283.32 (£704.40 – £421.08).  We propose to keep subscriptions unchanged at £10 per club for 2026.

Thanks are due to auditor John Manches, for examining the books of the Federation for 2025.  There were no questions and the report was agreed by all.

  1. Election of High Officers and Council Members.

Janet reported that the 3 High Officers, Chairperson, Janet Arm, Treasurer/Membership Secretary Katharine Deaville, and Webmaster/Events Secretary Beth Otway had all been re-elected in 2024 so were within their 3 year terms.  It was a pity that Beth was unable to attend any meetings, but we all thank her in her absence for the work she does.

Council Members stand for a single year at a time. Current members are Anne Bradbeer, Barbara Boyse, Nicky Cornell, John Negus, and Paul Yeoman who had all agree to stand again for a further year, bud sadly Pam and Roy Lomax have decided to finally stand down after being on the council since 2003, and Jane Swift has also done 10 years and decided to retire.  Those remaining were proposed en-bloc by Sarah Wilson, seconded by Wendy Bentall, and agreed by all.

To replace those retiring, we have been lucky enough to have two volunteers, Patricia Barrett from Nutfield, who has been co-opted since last autumn, and Tina Chant from Thursley, and we are very grateful to them.  These two were proposed by Janet Arm and seconded by Anne Mathieson, and agreed by all.

  1. Future Events.

Chairperson Janet said that or our next Spring Talk we are lucky enough that Beth has booked Tom Brown, Head Gardener at West Dean Gardens for our Spring Talk at 2.30pm on Saturday 21st March 2026.  I am sure many of you have been to West Dean Gardens, but it is a privilege to get Tom to come and talk to us.  He will be talking about ‘Making the most of your greenhouse’ which I am sure is a subject which will be on interest.  Tickets are on sale here today.  I do hope you will be able to come, but please note this is a Saturday afternoon talk.

I do hope that we will again manage to find someone who is prepared to open their garden for SHF members and who aren’t already open to others, have plenty of parking, and aren’t full of slopes and steps!  If you know of a garden that would fit the bill, please let me know.  It would be lovely to have one nearer the centre or the east of Surrey – but so far no-one has come up with a suitable idea.

I am really sorry that we haven’t got very many teams for our quiz today, (possibly people are still trying to avoid the Wisley area) but I hope those of you who have not competed before enjoy the experience!  Good luck everyone.

  1. Any other business. New council member Patricia asked if we would mind if she tried to find a suitable hall for a talk in the east or centre of Surrey, and we agreed that she should go ahead and try and find such a hall, then we might be able to have a speaker there. She has been round to several other clubs since being co-opted, and is trying to spread the word there.

The meeting closed at 3.10.pm followed by the Quiz.

Surrey Horticultural Federation Inter Club Quiz.

Teams competing in the Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz.

After the AGM 8 teams took part in the quiz with Quizmaster John Negus.  It was a close fought contest, with most clubs scoring well, and ended with a clear win for Hardy Plant Society Team 1, in second place Tilford, and in third place Worplesdon.  The final scores were as follows:-

NAME OF ASSOCIATION Total Position Prize
Hardy Plant Society Southern Counties – Team 1 70 1st £30
Tilford Gardening club 58 2nd £20
Worplesdon Gardening Club 45 3rd £10
Hardy Plant Society Southern Counties – Team 2 4th
Nutfield Gardening Society 5th
Thursley Horticultural Society 6th
Plant Heritage 7th
Lightwater Gardening Club 8th

The Chairperson presented the Quiz Trophy and cheques to winners and runners-up, and audience prizes were handed out.  Thanks were given to all those teams and council members who kindly brought along raffle prizes.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.
