Sad News: the Passing of local Judge, Dave Burton
I’m sorry to start with some sad news, but Sheila Rapley asked me to let you know that sadly after a long and determined battle with cancer, Dave Burton of Cobham has passed away. Dave was a well respected Judge, Manager of the Cobham Show, and the Allotment Shop Manager. Dave will be missed by all who knew him. He was a gentleman in the truest sense.
Borrow a Wildlife Recording Kit from the Surrey Wildlife Trust and Discover the Wildlife in your Area!

Surrey Wildlife Trust have announced the launch of their new ‘Wildlife Recording Kits’ – boxes filled with surveying equipment to help community groups undertake species monitoring on sites from gardens and churchyards, local green spaces, and woodlands. The kits are available to borrow (free of charge) from the Trust’s head office in Pirbright, from What Next? (Godalming Library of Things), or ZERO Carbon (Guildford Library of Things). Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Recording Kits can be reserved for one or two weeks at a time.
With one-third of our local species in trouble, Surrey Wildlife Trust are on a mission to encourage more people to take action to protect and provide homes for native plants and animals. Their kits can help you identify what wildlife live and grow in your area, from mini beasts to plants, to small mammals. The results will enable community groups to make informed land management decisions that benefit nature. After surveying your area you may opt to put up signage to encourage people not to walk on wildflowers, instal bird feeders filled with suitable food for a particular species, instal bat boxes, plant hedgerows to support butterflies and moths, or create ponds for newts.
Surrey Wildlife Trust currently has the following equipment available:
- Bat kit including high-viz jackets for working at night, a bat detector and call frequency guide.
- Pond kit including nets, trays for specimens and identification guides for a range of species.
- Minibeasts kit including magnifying pots, equipment for handling specimens and ID guides.
- Small mammals kit including footprint tunnels and plates, feeding kit and ‘tracks and signs’ ID guide.
- Soil kit with a corer and tester kit to establish soil chemistry.
- Plant kit including quadrats, magnifiers and ID guides for a huge range of local native flora.
- A trail camera kit is also available. This can be set up to record badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, birds, mice and other creatures that might visit when you are not present.
Once people have completed their surveys, the Trust is encouraging users to report their findings to the Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre (SBIC) to help it gain important information on the distribution and abundance of species and habitats across the county.

Help the Royal Horticultural Society understand how climate change is affecting UK gardens
What patterns and surprises have you observed in your garden? Take part in a survey to share your experiences and contribute to scientific research. A new collaborative PhD project aims to explore what the future of UK gardening could look like, how gardening practices could shift in a changing climate, and which plants are the most resilient. The results of this survey could help us future-proof our gardens. Please share this collaborative research on climate resilience, gardening, and garden plants – here’s a link to the survey.
The Rural Life Living Museum in Farnham needs your help!
The Rural Life Living Museum is unique collection of the discarded buildings, implements and objects of everyday life, collected by Madge and Henry Jackson since 1968. The couple opened their back garden to the public in 1973. Tragically, both of the couple’s children died young, and the Old Kiln Museum Charitable Trust was formed in 1984 to protect their legacy.
The Rural Life Living Museum has been created by many thousands of people who have donated objects and volunteered their time, support, and skills. In 2024, the Museum now has 20 buildings and a collection of 40,000 displayed objects. Read the museum’s mission statement here.
The Rural Life Living Museum is owned and operated by the Old Kiln Museum CIO, Registered Charity Number 1200370. The museum receives no external funding and has survived hand-to-mouth through ticket sales and donations. The rising cost of operating the museum now means that expenditure outstrips the income generated through ticket sales and donations.
The Rural Life Living Museum have already attempted to curb the effects of rising expenditure by restructuring the staff team, including making redundancies. All maintenance has been cut back so remaining resources can be concentrated on public delivery.
What would closure mean?
- The collection would be broken up and offered to other museums, but the museum feels that it’s unlikely that this collection would be relevant elsewhere, and so it would go to waste transfer.
- Whilst the site is ancient, it is not protected, and therefore could be developed upon and the museum in the garden would be gone forever. Therefore, much loved events, such as Weyfest and Village at War, would be left without a home.
- There would be a loss of half a million pounds to the local economy.
- A loss learning support to over 50 schools and educational groups that visit every year.
- The purpose that brings together the community of over 150 volunteers would be gone.
- The legacy of a great day out will be gone for the Rural Life Living Museum’s 41,000 visitors each year.
What is the Rural Life Living Museum’s goal?
- Their goal is to raise £150,000 by the end of October 2024.
- If every onsite visitor donated £3.75, they will reach their target.
- Alternatively, if every online follower the Rural Life Living Museum has on social media donated £17.25, they would reach their target.
- Or, if only 3,000 people donated £50, they would reach their target.
What will the funds allow the Rural Life Living Museum to do?
- Solve an immediate cash flow crisis and sustain the museum through the winter months, when income is at its lowest.
- Bring on board high level professional help to grow our audience to make our basic offering sustainable.
- Return depleted reserves so they can plan for the future and move to a sustainable operating model.
How can you help the Rural Life Living Museum?
- Bring your spare coins to put in the campaign milk churn in the Rural Life Living Museum’s shop.
- Donate to the Rural Life Living Museum online via their website.
- Tell your friends and share the Rural Life Living Museum’s fundraiser with your networks and on social media.
- Buy a ticket to visit the Rural Life Living Museum.
- Share your memories and share or what the Rural Life Living Museum means to you with the museum on their website.
Make a ”Mains to Rains” pledge and water the way nature intended

Have you made any ‘Mains to Rains‘ pledges yet? The mains2rains website helps us recognise how by adopting a few simple changes in our gardens and allotments, we can all help our gardens and outdoor spaces thrive without using mains water. We’re encouraging people to collect rainwater and re-use rainwater during dry spells.
What mains2rains pledges could you make?
- Could you install a water butt to collect rainwater from your roof?
- How about pledging to place container plants on saucers and trays during spring and summertime? This small change has a big difference, reducing the need for watering and fertilising, and making watering easier for you during the hottest months of the year.
- Can you switch to using self-watering containers? Self-watering containers save water and are easier to manage than traditional containers.
- Pledge to add a mulch of bark or homemade compost around any new plants you plant.
- Pledge to plant the right plant in the right place. For example, plant drought tolerant plants in free-draining sandy soils and moisture loving plants in wetter soils – be sure the plants you plant out are suited to the soil and conditions in your garden or allotment.
- Can you lift any paving slabs and plant up a flower bed or even sow a lawn instead?
- Instead of concreting your patio can you use permeable paving?

See all the pledges on the mains2rains website. The ‘Mains to Rains’ pledge is part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the Royal Horticultural Society and Cranfield University, part-funded by Innovate UK. Find more information and make your pledges on the mains2rains website.

Timothy Walker is a lecturer and horticultural expert, and a well known and very entertaining speaker. Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer. Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years. Why does this matter? The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.
Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023. The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA. Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.
If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can. Please take care and do not disturb an active nest. Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS). Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
Do you need certificates for your Flower Show?
