Surrey Horticultural Federation Summer Newsletter 2024

Hello and welcome to the Surrey Horticultural Federation Summer newsletter!

Where is the sunshine?  Will summer ever arrive?  I’m trying to remain positive as I feel grateful not to have any plants that need watering!

Please share this newsletter with your members and help them stay up to date with all the events happening in Surrey and the surrounding areas.

Contact Details for Highly Recommended Speaker, Keith Hine

Expert Speaker, Keith Hine gives talks in our area and has been highly recommended by SHF clubs and societies that have booked him to speak at their meetings.  I heard that some Programme Secretaries were struggling to email Keith – I think because they have struggled to type in his email address.  To avoid any misunderstandings, Keith Hine‘s email is keith_hine@hotmail.com with an “underscore” and not a “hyphen”.  If you’d rather speak to Keith, his mobile number is: 07969 117541.  Click here to email Keith: keith_hine@hotmail.com

Do you need certificates for your Flower Show?

The Surrey Horticultural Federation Certificates of Merit are available from our Chairman, Janet Arm.  If you would like to receive Certificates of Merit, please post an A4 or Foolscap sized, stamped addressed envelope with a large second class stamp (£1.55) to Janet Arm at Redleaf Nursery, Green Lane, Tilford, Farnham, Surrey, GU10 2AP.

Spreadsheets for Show Cards

John Manches has devised a special computer spreadsheet to cope with printing show entry cards and adding up the points won for cup presentations.  If any Surrey Horticultural Federation Clubs and Societies are interested in receiving John’s template, please contact John by email at: johnmanches74@gmail.com or phone 01252-702752.

Visit Stunning Local Gardens & Help Raise Vital Funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

This summer, many local private gardens will be opening their doors to raise funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.  There are many inspiring gardens to visit, including new gardens that have never opened before.  Attending these lovely garden events gives us a great day out but at the same time supports local hospice care.  Visit the Phyllis Tuckwell’s website for all the dates and details.

If you’re interested in opening your garden for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, please contact Jenny Newman, Jenny’s email is Jenny.Newman@pth.org.uk.

On 13th June 2024, Squire’s in Frensham are hosting a talk: Teens in the Garden: how working with nature improves mental wellbeing with speaker Vanessa Lanham-Day, Co-founder: Green Hub Project for Teens

This event takes place on Thursday 13th June 2024 at 3.30pm at Squire’s Garden Centre in Frensham, The Reeds Road, Frensham, Surrey, GU10 3BP (in the Café Bar).

Squire’s Garden Centre in Frensham has joined forces with Surrey-based teen wellbeing charity, the Green Hub Project for Teens, to host a wellbeing talk, focusing on how nature and gardening can improve mental wellbeing in young people.

The Green Hub is Squire’s Frensham’s Charity of the Year 2024.  The talk is part of Squire’s ‘Plant Happy’ campaign launched earlier this year, which focuses on the valuable and important role plants and gardening play in our wellbeing.  The Green Hub’s Co-founder, Vanessa Lanham-Day, will deliver an informative talk explaining how nature can help the wellbeing of young people in today’s society.  This is a subject which has been well-documented and is increasingly recognised as having significant benefits on mental health and general wellbeing.  Vanessa will focus on the teen mental health crisis, including ‘The five ways to Wellbeing’ – what they are and why they work.  She will unpick the evidence to show what is working and use the Green Hub Project as a case study, explaining the impact it has made made so far.

Taking place in Squire’s Café Bar, tickets for the event are £5 and include tea or coffee and a slice of cake – advanced booking is essential (either online or in-store).  Profits from the event will be donated to The Green Hub. The talk, to include a Q&A session, will last approximately 60 mins.

Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: “We know from our own research with our customers how much gardens, plants, the outdoors and being ‘at one’ with nature mean to them.  Working with plants can have a tremendously positive impact on our existence, in many cases gardening can be a brilliant antidote to the stresses of our everyday lives.

The Green Hub Project for Teens has done some tremendous work in this arena, specifically with young people. I know Vanessa’s talk will be engaging and enlightening. I encourage people to come along and hear her talk about her first-hand experience as she explains how nature can support wellbeing in teenagers, and more widely, in all of us in different ways.”

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.
