Surrey Horticultural Federation AGM and QUIZ
The Federation’s 46th AGM was held in November 2022. President Daphne Foulsham opened the afternoon by welcoming 84 committee, members and quiz teams, then Chairperson Janet Arm read her first report: The year started well with another interesting and well attended talk from Chris Beardshaw. It is good to be able to offer clubs the chance to hear a ‘celebrity’ speaker, as the cost is way beyond what most small clubs can afford. We will finally get to hear Adam Frost in 2023, and I am sure that the tickets will sell out very quickly.
I am sorry that we didn’t manage to arrange an Open Garden last summer – but with the very hot dry weather most owners felt their gardens weren’t up to scratch. Hopefully we will have one for next year.
I know it has been difficult, particularly for smaller clubs with older membership, to keep in touch during covid, and for some impossible to have meetings. A good number managed with Zoom, but there is nothing like being able to get together to discuss problems and find new friends. I am pleased to have helped an East Surrey group get together and in future I rather think clubs may have to merge or go under, so please let’s use all our joint resources to keep in touch with others.
As over the last year, Beth will be writing the Newsletters and keeping the Website up to date, and I will still be fielding telephone enquiries. We have missed the Feedback forms, but please send these to her – it seems to be an excellent way of finding new speakers as both these and judges are getting harder to find. If anyone is interested in becoming a judge do contact the Surrey Guild of Horticultural Judges and Lecturers, or the National Vegetable Society, they will be delighted to help you train.
I would just like to say how easy both Kathy and Beth have made it for me this year by taking on most of my previous job between them, and to thank both them, our President, and the rest of the Council for their work. Like most clubs, it is getting hard to get younger volunteers to help, but if you would like to join the Council it might let some others feel they can retire gracefully without letting others down!
Treasurers Report
A copy of the accounts for the past year was circulated, and Katharine reported that the Federation currently has £6,737.85 in hand. Income for the year was £1,121.00 and expenditure was £847.26
A loss of £242.89 was released from the reserve at the end of September 2022, leaving a balance of £45 relevant to the 2023 spring talk. The net overall result was a surplus of £30.85.
We were delighted to welcome 4 new member clubs during the year and had a total of 88 member clubs in 2022. We propose to keep subscriptions unchanged at £10 a year, and my thanks are due to auditor John Manches for examining the books of the Federation for 2022.
Election of High Officers and Council Members
President Daphne Foulsham said that after last year’s change in high officers, the three positions of Chairperson, Treasurer/Membership Secretary and Webmaster/Events Secretary had only completed one year, so had two years to go.
Council Members, however, stand for a single year at a time. They are Anne Bradbeer, Barbara Boyse, Nicky Cornell, Roy Lomax, Pam Lomax, John Negus, Jane Swift, and Paul Yeoman who had all agree to stand again for a further year, and they were elected en-bloc.
Speaker Feedback
I have attached the latest speaker feedback I’ve received to this email. Please note, that this speaker feedback is strictly private and confidential; it’s not to be published online or shared with your members, but is strictly to assist the programme secretaries from all the Surrey Horticultural Federation member clubs and societies and help member clubs and societies find good quality speakers.
Has a speaker given a talk to your society over the past few months? Please share your feedback with the other Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies by emailing me your thoughts, both positive and negative on the speakers you’ve heard. My email is beth@pumpkinbeth.com.
Ever Thought About Becoming a Judge or Joining the Surrey Guild of Judges & Lecturers?
The Surrey Guild of Horticultural Lecturers & Judges are looking for more people to come forward and volunteer to become judges for local shows. Anyone who is an exhibitor at shows is halfway in the knowledge required. If you put yourself forward as a judge, you will be placed with a senior judge in your area for advice and training. This usually involves 2 years of Spring/Summer / Autumn Shows bearing in mind this is only 3 weeks each season.
At the moment, The Surrey Guild of Horticultural Lecturers & Judges have 40 judges, with Surrey Federation having some 90 Clubs / Societies as members. Some shows require two judges for each of their shows, which makes it very difficult to cover. PLEASE ask yourself if you can give something back and become a judge? If you’re interested, please contact Sheila Rapley, Vice Chairman of the Surrey Guild of Horticultural Lecturers & Judges on 01428 682149.

Tender Shoots Free Zoom Events
Don’t miss Tender Shoot’s upcoming Zoom talk ‘How to modernise garden clubs & recruit new members‘ – this is a free event that is open to all.
Indy was asked by the RHS to do a presentation for them at their recent RHS Affiliated Societies Forum at RHS Bridgwater to a collection of garden clubs. Indy is now taking it a step further and doing a workshop on zoom which anyone is welcome to join. It’s on Thursday 23rd February 2023 at 7.30pm and there’s no charge to attend the Zoom. The session will cover some elements of the treasurers role to make it easier, so this part would also be useful to non-gardening groups, such as church groups, community groups, WI, charitable clubs etc. The session will also cover the treasurers card payment summary document that I produced for the RHS which they sent out to all their affiliated societies, so some of you may have already received it via the RHS. The Zoom meeting will open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. Here is the Zoom code (it’s exactly the same code & link for all Tender Shoots Zoom events):

Here are some more of Tender Shoots Zoom talks:
March 20th Monday – Peter Moore – ‘Plant Breeding’ – Peter is a Plant Heritage National Collection Holder and also a commercial plant breeder. It’s extremely likely you will already have one of his plants growing in your garden that’s been developed by Peter, such as buddleia, philadelphus, choisya etc. He will be giving us his inside tips on plant breeding.
March 27th Monday – George Hargreaves – Notable Botanic Gardens of the UK – George is a volunteer guide at Westonbirt Arboretum and will be giving us a tour of the most inspiring Botanic Gardens in the UK.
September 25th Monday – Lucy Hartley – Climate change and its effect on our gardens – Lucy is a very talented garden designer running her own consultancy. The climate emergency has been with us for a while. We all need to do what we can to both mitigate and prepare for climate change. After covering, briefly, what climate change actually means for our gardens this talk will look at ways we can use our gardens to guard and support local biodiversity while sequestering more carbon. It will then cover insight on how to cope with the changes that are coming. Tips are given on how to nurture a more healthy and resilient garden.
October 26th Thursday – Timothy Walker (former curator of Oxford Botanic Garden) – Bordering on Insanity (creating an all-year-round border) – This talk looks exclusively at the herbaceous border in my Wife’s garden and covers the principles and practicalities to be adopted when trying to create a border that is interesting all year round. It concludes with a look at a collection of must-have plants for such a border.
November 8th Wednesday – Andrew Mikolajski – Do Your Roots Need Doing – Good root growth is essential for healthy and productive plants. How can you be sure yours are performing well under ground when you can’t even see them.
