What to Do if your Speaker Doesn’t Arrive to Deliver Their Talk?
In the last Surrey Horticultural Federation newsletter, I asked what you did if a speaker turn up to give their talk?
I’ve been a Programme Secretary for a number of horticultural societies and gardening clubs for over ten years. In this time, I’ve discovered some fantastic speakers and I’ve been fortunate that very few speakers have needed to cancel our booking prior to the event. Only one speaker has not shown up on the night. To minimise the risk of future problems, in my email communications I always include the full date of our booking (including the day of the week and the year) whenever I refer to the talk. I also embolden the text showing the date and venue to make it easier to read at a glance. I enquire what equipment the speaker requires when confirming our booking and I record this. Then, a month before the talk takes place I’ll email the speaker to double check everything to ensure that nothing has changed and I have arranged all the equipment they need. Naturally, this also serves as a helpful reminder about the event.
If a speaker fails to arrive, consider holding an impromptu Gardeners’ Question Time – although this option relies on there being experienced gardeners who are both knowledgable and willing to answer questions.
Another option is to see if any one in the audience is a speaker or wants to give a talk. Alternatively, ask members of the audience to talk about the plants that grow best in their garden or home (don’t forget houseplants!) and ask them to talk about their growing conditions and anything they have found helpful to discover or to talk about a problem they have found challenging to overcome. You could also use this as an opportunity to talk about what members want from the group and discuss any visits, shows, or activities you might do in future.
Judy Douch, West End Village Garden Club’s Secretary says,
“I’m writing in response to your latest email re speakers being “no show”. It has happened to us at WEVGC on more than one occasion.
With the minimal amount of notice we’ve contacted Geoff Peach who can talk and talk, and be thoroughly entertaining about horticultural life in general. When no notice was given and our speaker didn’t show up, one of our members, who worked at a local herb nursery, gave an impromptu talk on how the herbs were grown and processed. We are also fortunate to have one of the SHF speakers as a member!
However post COVID we have now persuaded one or two members to prepare a talk in advance to have as backup. Some of these talks are based on holidays abroad (one or two go to Australia and New Zealand, often with stopovers in Malaysia or Singapore). Many years ago, I had the job as being the quiz person for the SHF so I do have a stock of quiz questions (needing an update) to hand..”
If you have any new suggestions for what to do if a speaker doesn’t show, please email me beth@pumpkinbeth.com and I’ll add your suggestion to my next newsletter.

CHAPS Plant Sale at Churt Village Fete
Churt Horticulture & Produce Society (CHAPS) held their annual plant sale at Churt village fete on the 8th June 2024. Thanks to the large number of attendees at the fete and the large array of plants on sale, this was a very successful fund-raising event for CHAPS. Indeed, many sales were made even before the fete officially opened at 1400 hours! Thank you to all CHAPS members who contributed plants for the sale and thank you to Luffs Farm Shop and Garden Centre who provided a selection of subsidised plants for sale. We are also grateful to Lisa Skirrow and Mandy Martin who organised the plant stall and kept the rest of the committee members in check on the day.

For CHAPS members, a reminder that CHAPS’ next event is the Summer Party to be held at Quinnettes on the evening of Friday 2nd August 2024. Full details are available on the CHAPS website.
West End Village Garden Club

West End Village Garden Club are organised and involved in the local community. Their meeting place is where the Parish Office is situated, so, in return for free hire they maintain their local War Memorial and the recently refurbished, late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Garden, which are on the same site. The land belongs to the Parish Council.

On the day that I contacted West End Village Garden Club, fifteen of them had spent two very happy hours weeding the garden and installing the summer bedding, which they grew themselves.

The London Children’s Flower Society are Looking for Volunteer Judges
Since its foundation in 1945, the London Children’s Flower Society has given children from Nursery, Primary, Secondary, and Special needs schools across London, the opportunity to take an interest in horticulture by encouraging them to enter their gardening competitions. Many of these children live in impoverished areas, with little to no access to outside space.
The London Children’s Flower Society currently run a spring bulb competition in the autumn, providing daffodil and hyacinth bulbs to schools. Their Summer Seed and Garden competitions are launched in January. They sell Bee & Butterfly friendly flowers, herbs, and vegetable seeds at a massively discounted rate. In September 2024, The London Children’s Flower Society will be offering all schools £5 worth of free bulbs/seeds.
The London Children’s Flower Society support approximately 200 schools and their teachers, sending their team of volunteer judges to appraise and award certificates to each child for their efforts. From these schools they select the top 27 gold awarded schools and invite them to attend an Annual Trophy ceremony at the London Guildhall. The children get to come along to receive their school’s trophy and prizes, presented usually by either their Patron, HRH the Duchess of Edinburgh, or their President, Alan Titchmarsh MBE, along with the current Master of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners.
The London Children’s Flower Society have created a Teachers Toolkit for schools to show the benefit of growing and gardening and demonstrate how they can link this activity to other subjects in the national curriculum, such as Art, English, Religious Education, and Science. The London Children’s Flower Society feel there are many schools in London that would benefit from gardening and that there is a real appetite for schools to get involved, especially in the current climate. Not only does gardening encourage children to spend more quality time outside in the fresh air, but gardening has also been proven to have many health benefits for physical well-being and mental health.
The London Children’s Flower Society runs entirely on donations and has to secure funding each year, to continue to provide opportunities for Schools to get involved in horticulture. They have a small team of part time staff, a board of trustees, and over 70 volunteers. T he Society is keen to engage with other Organisations that may be able to support and foster their work as a Charity, along with a wider knowledge of the Societies’ aims to support their Horticultural Education to London Schools. To find out more, visit The London Children’s Flower Society’s website or email to register your interest.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer. Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years. Why does this matter? The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.
Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023. The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA. Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.
If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can. Please take care and do not disturb an active nest. Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS). Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
