Surrey Horticultural Federation March 2022 Newsletter

Hello everyone,

First, a reminder for ticket holders that Chris Beardshaw’s talk is going ahead at 2.30pm in the AFTERNOON on Thursday 10th March 2022. NB: this talk is sold out.

Surrey Horticultural Federation Afternoon Spring Talk

With Chris Beardshaw at 2.30pm on Thursday 10th March 2022 at Normandy Village Hall

We’re looking forward to the Surrey Horticultural Federation’s Spring Talk at 2.30pm on Thursday 10th March 2022, at the Normandy Village Hall, Glaziers Lane, Normandy, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 2DD. During this talk, Chris Beardshaw will tell us about his commission to redesign the 13 acre Arts & Crafts gardens at Mount Grace Priory, an English Heritage property in Yorkshire. The public garden features terraces, dells, and glorious herbaceous borders.

COVID Precautions

We want to keep all talk attendees safe, so we have a few requests to make of anyone planning to attend Chris Beardshaw’s talk:

  • On arrival please could you hand a piece of paper with your name telephone number or email address, so we can contact you if anyone should develop COVID after the talk. It’s easier to do this ahead of time and simply pop a note in your bag to take with you.
  • We would appreciate it if everyone who attends Chris Beardshaw’s talk would take a lateral flow test on the day of the event. If you test positive for COVID you should not attend.
  • We also ask that anyone who is suffering from cold or flu symptoms please does not attend. If you feel unwell, test positive for covid, or have been in contact with someone with COVID in the last seven days, please do not attend.
  • We ask that all attendees wear a mask at all times, during the talk.
  • We ask that if any attendee develops COVID in the seven days after the talk that they email me ASAP beth@pumpkinbeth.com or telephone Janet Arm (01252-783133) to let us know.
  • We will be spacing chairs apart but encouraging those who have travelled together, live together, or regularly socialise together to sit together.
  • We won’t be serving drinks or refreshments. Attendees are encouraged to bring drinks with them.
  • There will be hand sanitisers – please use them.

Heads Or Tails

Instead of holding a raffle at this event we will be playing ‘Heads or Tails’. We have some lovely prizes for the top three winners. If you’ve not heard of Heads or Tails this is how the game works: All those wanting to take part pay £1 and stand up (NB: Please bring the correct change if you would like to play – attendees can play up to 3 times, so you may want to bring £3). Two people on stage toss a coin, and the audience are asked to guess which way the coin lands. If they think 2 heads, then audience members put both hands on their head, if they think 2 tails, then they put both hands on their rear end (tail!), and if they think one of each then one hand on their head, one on their tail. When all have chosen, the results of the toss are called. Audience members who guessed correctly remain standing and everyone else sits down; then we repeat the coin toss and keep guessing until we have found a winner.

Gardens Open ‘By Prior Arrangement’ through the National Garden Scheme

Many of the NGS gardens open for regular days to the general public, but we know that there are many garden enthusiasts and gardening groups who enjoy a more intimate visit to a garden with the opportunity to meet the garden owners.  I have attached the NGS newsletter to this email which provides more details of the participating gardens.

Details of all the gardens are given in full on the NGS website www.ngs.org.uk and in the 2022 Garden Visitors Handbook (Yellow Book) but perhaps having all the details of just ‘By Arrangement’ gardens in one document will make it easier for tour organisers to plan.

If you would like any further information about these gardens, do please get in touch directly with the garden owners.

Publicising Your Events

Please email me the details of your upcoming events. To publicise your event successfully, I need to know:

What kind of event it is?
Where your event will be held?
What time it starts?
Is your event free for members?
How much will it cost non-members to attend?

Note that we only publicise events for Societies, Clubs, Groups, & Associations that are members of the Surrey Horticultural Federation – so if you haven’t renewed your 2022 membership, please do so via the form on this page: https://surreyhorticulturalfederation.org/news/membership-renewal/

Wireless Portable Amplifiers and Wireless Lapel Microphones

Do you have any recommendations for a small wireless portable amplifier with wireless lapel microphones? One of our clubs have found their Pulse Megamouth speakers were OK, but they had problems with the rechargeable batteries. After being unused (due to COVID) they now don’t work. They are now looking to find a suitable replacement. This particular club’s searches have hit a problem with the need for both the amp and mic to be wireless. Do you have any ideas? What microphone and amplifier does your club or society use? Do you have any products that you’d recommend? Similarly, are there any products you regret buying? Do please let me know and I’ll share the info between all of the Surrey Horticultural Federation societies, clubs, and groups.

Looking for vases for shows or displays?

Grayshott Gardeners have purchased a set of new green bikini vases and so they are now selling all their magnolia vases. They have 102 x 2” vases, 23 x 3” vases and 24 x 4.25” available at a cost of £2.50, £3.00, and £4.50 respectively. If you are interested buying in a batch, please email Sue Wheeler suewheeler10@hotmail.co.uk .

Upcoming Events

The SHF Website has a complete list of events for all clubs, and is updated regularly, so that’s the best source to find talks and other events for clubs across Surrey. Below is a list of events scheduled for the next few months (see our calendar in full here).

Please keep the speaker feedback confidential but do please share the information about Chris Beardshaw’s talk and the rest of this email with your members.

I wish you and all your members a very happy growing season ahead.

Best wishes to you all
Beth
