Surrey Horticultural Federation Late Summer 2024 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Surrey Horticultural Federation Late Summer newsletter!

Please share this newsletter with your members and help them stay up to date with all the events happening in Surrey and the surrounding areas.

Members of Surrey Horticultural Federation Clubs and Societies Enjoy 25% off at The Plant Centre in August!

The Plant Centre at Hortus Loci Ltd, Hound Green, Hook, Hampshire, RG27 8LQ, would like to offer all members of Surrey Horticultural Federation gardening clubs and societies a 25% discount on all plants sold during August.  If you would like to circulate this voucher to your members, they are welcome to print the voucher and pay the Plant Centre a visit – they are open 7 days a week.

The Plant Centre’s café, Casu Hortus, provides coffee, cakes, and light lunches.  The Plant Centre propagate and grow on-much of their own stock on-site, and they pride themselves on offering a far greater range of plants than most garden centres.  I’m told that the Plant Centre’s customers can purchase every kind of plant, from large trees to little alpines, and everything in between!  Find more information on the Plant Centre’s website.

The Mission Aviation Fellowship (M.A.F.) are offering Surrey Horticultural Federation Clubs & Societies Free Talks

The Mission Aviation Fellowship or M.A.F. Is the world’s largest humanitarian air operator.  For over 75 years, they have been flying light aircraft (M.A.F. currently run 116 aircraft ) over mountains, jungles, swamps, and deserts, in locations where journeys can take days or weeks by road, but only minutes or hours by plane.  The M.A.F. have flown more than 1500 aid, development, and mission organisations to bring medical care, emergency relief, and long-term development projects to remote communities.  Their pilots and workers deliver aid workers, doctors. pastors, and school equipment.  When disasters occur the M.A.F. can help by delivering water, food, and medicines quickly.

Some examples of The Mission Aviation Fellowship’s work include:
1) Transit camp of 150,000 people in Renk in Southern Sudan.  In just one day the M.A.F. transported more than half a ton of medical supplies to the camp and brought back 16 refugees in need of treatment.
2) In Simba, 3,000 people depend on coffee picking to survive.  Every year, they rely on M.A.F. to fly that coffee to cities be sold on their behalf.

The M.A.F. would welcome an opportunity to speak at group meetings, to spread the word about the work they’re doing, all of which would not be possible without the donations they receive (Only 20p in the pound goes on M.A.F. overheads!).  The M.A.F. have a speaker who gives a talk and power-point presentation on their work, which lasts about 20 minutes.  M.A.F. talks are totally free – just provide the coffee!  To book a Mission Aviation Fellowship talk, please contact Clive Bailey via email, clive.bailey86@gmail.com or telephone 07917 726 117.

Squire’s Charity ‘Plantathon’ takes place on Friday 6th September 2024 at all Squire’s Garden Centres!

The first event of Squire’s charity year will support of each of Squire’s Garden Centres’ charities; it’s part of Squire’s ‘Charity of the Year’ programme.  Each centre has chosen a local charity to support, and throughout the year they host various fundraising events to support their charities.  This forms a great platform for charities to communicate their messages and share information about the work they’re doing for their local community.  Representatives from the charities will be in attendance at Squire’s Garden Centres during the ‘Plantathon’ on Friday 6th September 2024, when the charities will be working with Squire’s Garden Centre teams to plant up an abundance of colourful containers.  The profit from the sale of these containers will go to each centre’s local charity.

Keep an eye on Squire’s Garden Centres, as they are about to announce who their chosen 16 charities are for the coming year – from August 2024 through until July 2025.  During this current year (which just finished at the end of July), Squire’s Garden Centres raised £20,000 for local causes, which is amazing!  Squire’s Garden Centre in Badshot Lea supported space2grow.  Squire’s Garden Centre in Reigate supported SASH, and Squire’s Garden Centre in Woking supported Woking & Sam Beare Hospice.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.

Publicising Your Club or Society’s Events
