Adam Frost Talk, by Janet Arm

On Wednesday 22nd February 2023, after three years of postponements and cancellations due to Covid, the Surrey Horticultural Federation was delighted to finally host Gardeners’ World Presenter, Adam Frost, with his new talk ‘Making the most of your Garden’.

The hall was packed to capacity as Adam went through a series of excellent pictures and suggestions on how to look at your soil, the aspect of the garden, and the layers of greenery to build up the structure of trees, shrubs, herbaceous, and right down to ground cover.  He gave us some good suggestions of suitable varieties, and advised us to make a list of just a few good plants and then go and buy the best.

Adam also talked about his life in horticulture, going from being thought of as ‘useless’ at school but then finding out he had to learn latin names at horticultural college – and wondering what the ‘bright lot’ had to do to beat that!  He has recently downsized from the large garden we have seen on TV to a much more compact garden, and shared his plans for his new garden.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the evening.   We had several comments along the lines of ‘the best talk I have been to’ and ‘why doesn’t he take over from Monty Don?’  I did ask Adam the last question but not surprisingly he was reluctant to answer!

Next Spring we will have Nick Hamilton, the son of the late Geoff Hamilton, as our speaker.  Nick will be giving us a talk entitled, Barnsdale after Geoff (1996-present day). The date is 2.30pm on Sunday 17th March 2024 at Normandy Village Hall……… so put this date in your diaries now! Tickets will go on sale in November 2023.

Surrey Horticultural Federation Garden Visit to ‘Grattons’ in Dunsfold

We are very grateful indeed to Sheri Sticpewich, who has kindly agreed to open her wonderful garden ‘Grattons’ in Dunsfold, exclusively for Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies from 2.30pm until 4.30pm on Sunday 2nd July 2023!

Please add this date to your diaries and share this information with all your members – we hope to see you there!

WFGA and the WRAGs Trainee Scheme – gardens in Surrey urgently required.
By Alison Hepworth, WFGA Regional Manager for Surrey, Kent, and London and SGT member

WFGA (Working for Gardeners Association), has been inspiring gardeners for over a century.  Formed in 1899 it is a charity whose aim is ‘Advancing Horticulture’.  Its original intention was to provide education and employment for women working on the land, and from it sprang the Women’s Land Army.  Now open equally to men and women, alongside the WRAGs (Work and Retrain as A Gardener) training scheme, it also offers workshops, skill days and garden visits.

The pandemic, which now seems a distant memory, led to an uplift in the interest in horticulture due to the enforced period of time spent at home and in the garden during lockdown.  As widely reported in the press, the nurturing and consoling nature of working outdoors and in the garden has led to a thirst for knowledge about plants, a desire to improve horticultural skills and, in many cases, an opportunity to reassess one’s future and working life.

At Loseley Park with the Head Gardener Burny and WRAGS trainee.

WRAGs offers a unique opportunity to learn practically in a carefully selected garden over four seasons.  It is aimed at those men and women who are considering changing direction and want a career in horticulture.  Some have been made redundant or want to expand on their RHS studies and volunteering.  The WRAGs scheme offers them a positive step towards change and a source of hope.

Trainees work for 12-14 hours a week for a year under the instruction of the garden owner or head gardener.  An administration fee of £600 to join the scheme on confirmation of a placement is paid by the trainee to WFGA, although this can be funded by a separate charity for those who are unable to afford it.  Trainees are paid the National Living Wage, currently £10.42 per hour, by the garden owner on a self-employed basis, or PAYE. Regional Managers monitor and visit trainees and use their local knowledge to source new gardens.  Graduates of the scheme, which has been operating successfully now for some 30 years, have gone on to run their own garden business, work in plant nurseries and become head gardeners.

At Hole Park in Kent with training by Quentin Stark.

WFGA is always on the look-out for garden owners who have established a garden they are proud of and can pass on their skill and knowledge to a new generation of gardeners.  Training is built around the charity’s curriculum, and Regional Managers are on hand to advise.  If you think that you can give a trainee a year’s part-time paid experience, please get in touch.  You could be the catalyst that propels hopeful life-changers into a rewarding new career.

Alison is very happy to give a short talk (a 30 minute talk followed by questions) about WFGA and WRAGS to any interested gardening clubs and societies.

If you have any questions about the scheme, please do contact Alison Hepworth via email: alison.wfga@gmail.com or through the contacts listed below.  Contact: admin@wfga.org.uk; wfga.org.uk. Instagram: @wfga_org

Headley (NB: this is Headley in Hampshire) offers a huge range of interesting gardens with varied features including meadowland, woodlands, mixed family gardens, sunny borders and shade-loving plants.  Headley’s Through the Garden Gate Open Garden Event provides a wonderful opportunity to visit private gardens with all of these features, as well as courtyards, beautiful mature trees, borders, greenhouses, vegetable gardens, ponds, formal gardens, and a wild cottage garden.  The group has a long experience with offering visitors a warm welcome and a great day out. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Ty Newydd will not be opening as originally published; however, there is an additional garden opening – The Tithe Barn.

Tickets can be booked in advance or on the day.  Here’s a link to more information on the National Garden Scheme website.
