Back in November we held our Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz and AGM; our President Daphne Foulsham opened the afternoon meeting by welcoming representatives from 84 Horticultural Societies and gardening clubs, including these clubs and societies’ quiz teams.

Twenty teams took part in the Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz.  Thanks to our fantastic Quizmaster, John Negus.  It was a good contest, with most clubs scoring well, and ended in a win for the Hardy Plant Society’s 1st Team, 2nd place for Plant Heritage’s 2nd Team, with the Hardy Plant Society’s 2nd Team in 3rd place!

7th Place: Onslow Village Garden Club, Score: 54
8th Place: Plant Heritage 1st Team, Score: 52
9th Place: Ripley & District Horticultural Society, Score: 52

Congratulations to Growing Redhill!

Congratulations to Growing Redhill who won a volunteer team award in the Reigate & Banstead Volunteer Awards 2022!

Merstham Station Planting

Have you seen Growing Redhill‘s ‘shop window’ of planting on Merstham Station?  They’ve been gardening there for over a decade.  This year was particularly challenging with the heatwave, but plants from family-run Buckland Nurseries Garden Centre in Reigate and homegrown plants by Gina have provided colour all year.  Commuters and travellers really appreciate seeing the flowers and plants at the station.

Growing Redhill have planted spring bulbs to areas of the Memorial Park in Redhill, thanks to the Reigate & Banstead Borough Council Greenspaces Team.  There will be daffodils, alliums, and tulips to add a splash of colour to look forward to this spring.

Growing Redhill Help Merstham Brownies Complete their Gardening Badge

In May and October 2022, Growing Redhill supported the Merstham Brownies as they completed their gardening badge.  In October, they helped the Brownies plant spring bulbs in a mini cauldron and design their ideal garden.  During their May gardening session, the Brownies potted up ‘Minibel’ tomato plants and sowed beans.

Other highlights this year include:

  • Helping people at Redhill Food Club to ‘grow their own’.
  • Sponsoring raised beds at St Johns Church, Redhill.
  • Hosting a meeting for East Surrey horticultural clubs together with the Surrey Horticultural Federation.

As Growing Redhill head into their 15th year, they have roles available for gardening volunteers and organisers in 2023.  If you’d like to lend a hand, or make a donation, please contact Debbie Fox (secretary@growingredhill.co.uk) or Karen Murray (admin@growingredhill.co.uk).

Speaker Feedback

Thank you to everyone that shared their feedback on the quality of the speakers their club or society had booked.  By sharing our feedback privately within the Surrey Horticultural Federation group, we can all improve and maintain the quality of our talks and events.  Please note that I email speaker feedback to all the SHF clubs and societies that are members of the Surrey Horticultural Federation, but this feedback is strictly confidential and is not to be published online or shared with anyone outside of the Programme Secretaries and committee members of the Surrey Horticultural Federation member clubs and societies.

Has a speaker given a talk to your society over the past few months?  Please share your feedback with the other Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies by emailing me, beth@pumpkinbeth.com.

How Do You Manage Your Society or Club’s Events?

This week, one member asked me how the other Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies managed their membership records.  This particular club uses a combination of an excel spreadsheet and Google contacts.  How does your club or society manage their records?  Have you found any helpful solutions?  Equally important – have you found anything that didn’t work as well as you hoped?  Do let us know and I’ll share the results in my next newsletter.

I’ve not tried Member Mojo, but I found them online when I was searching for options to help the member that contacted me – here’s a link: https://membermojo.co.uk/

Publicising Your Club or Society’s Events

If your club or society is a fully paid up member of the Surrey Horticultural Federation, I will be delighted to add your society or club’s events to our website. Please email me beth@pumpkinbeth.com.  To successfully publicise your event, I need to know:

  • What date your event takes place.
  • What time your event starts.
  • Where your event is held.
  • What type of event you’re holding? If it’s a talk, please let me know the name of the speaker and their talk title.
  • Finally, I need to know the entrance fee for visitors.
