Please Consider Opening Your Garden to Raise Much Needed Funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

Please consider sharing your beautiful garden space with others to raise vital funds for Phyllis Tuckwell’s patients and families in our community. Whether you have a country garden, a charming cottage plot or a small courtyard full of pots and baskets, opening your garden to visitors is a lovely way to support local Hospice Care and share your passion for gardening with others. You can open your garden to the public or family & friends only, on a date that suits you. Meet other garden enthusiasts and enjoy a friendly community event.
Phyllis Tuckwell will provide guidance and materials to help you prepare and promote your day. Help raise funds for Phyllis Tuckwell’s hospice care across West Surrey and North East Hampshire. As a charity, only 25% of the Phyllis Tuckwell’s costs are usually covered by the Government/NHS, which means they have to raise over £25,000 every single day to continue their care free of charge for patients and their families, which is why they rely so heavily on our community for their support. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Helena at helena.burke@pth.org.uk or call Helena on 01252 729446. Thank you.

Would you like a Second-Hand Robinsons Rosette Greenhouse measuring 10ft7 x 8ft8?

Would you like a second-hand, Robinsons Rosette Greenhouse, measuring 10ft7 x 8ft8 in Pastel Sage? This greenhouse cost £2,628.00 when it was purchased in 2019. The owner is happy to give it away for free to any Surrey Horticultural Federation members who are able to travel to Putney, and dismantle and remove the greenhouse. The person taking this on would need to be aware of (and capable of) the considerable work involved in dismantling and re-erecting a greenhouse – it’s not a small task. When it is installed in its new home, the greenhouse will need to be put on a solid base – concrete slabs or similar.

The greenhouse is described as being in good condition, the reason it is being given away is because the owner wishes to replace the greenhouse with a garden building. One base level glass pane broke in the past, but a new piece of glass was glued on top of this.

The greenhouse is in Putney, SW15, near the top of the A3. There is parking on the owner’s drive (or free parking on the road at weekends).
If you’re interested, the greenhouse can be inspected from Saturday 14 March 2026. Initial contact should be made via email, please contact Xanthe Neale, xanthe.neale@gmail.com.

Dunsfold & Hascombe Horticultural Society have arranged to visit The Manor House garden in Haslemere on Tuesday 9th June 2026
Dunsfold & Hascombe Horticultural Society have arranged for their members to visit The Manor House garden in Haslemere on Tuesday 9th June 2026.

The Manor House gardens are set across six acres in a valley on the edge of Haslemere. The house, which is Grade II listed, has its origins in the 14th century but is mostly 16th and 17th century with later alterations. The house sits on the southern slopes of Clammer Hill, enjoying views to Black Down and Quellwood Common.
The pleasure grounds were mostly created in late 19th century by James and Agatha Stewart Hodgson who came from Lythe Hill and their daughter the Marchioness of Sligo, who continued to own the house until the 1920s. The gardens have been restored since 1991 and include terraces and a water garden. The terrain is steep and stepped. The grounds were laid out across the terraced landscape around 1873 in an English romantic style and were heavily influenced by Gertrude Jekyll. They were once described in Country Life as the ‘Hanging Gardens of Haslemere’. It was also one of the inaugural gardens in the National Garden Scheme.

Julia Patterson has been Head Gardener at the Manor House for the past five years. During this time, Julia and her team have been infilling herbaceous borders, replanting the rose garden, and planting lots of bulbs to extend the seasons. Visitors can admire the garden’s mature trees, orchard and wild flower meadow, greenhouses and a magnificent pergola. Water features heavily throughout the garden, with a series of ponds travelling throughout, and an area inspired by Japanese influences.

If you’re interested in becoming a member of Dunsfold & Hascombe Horticultural Society and wish to join them for this visit, please email membershipdhhs@gmail.com. DHHS members pay £15 per person for this visit and guests pay £18 (if spaces are available). Tickets include a guided tour of the garden, plus refreshments of tea, coffee, and cake.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer. Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years. Why does this matter? The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.
Thank you to Entomologist, Andrew Halstead for updating us on the Asian Hornet. Andrew says, “Last year there was a record 162 nests found in England, mainly in the south East around the Channel ports; Ireland and the Scilly Isles also had their first nests. Some of the English nests were not found before they had time to produce and release next years queens. Together with queens hitching a ride on cross-Channel transport, 2026 is likely to be another busy year for the Defra staff that currently deal with reported sightings. Sooner or later it is likely that Defra will decide that Asian hornet is now here to stay and they will withdraw support from the eradication programme. We will then be in the same situation as France and other European countries where AH is well established. An Asian hornet nest is estimated to consume about 11.5kg of insects during the summer-autumn, so the impact on bees and other insects will be considerable. Many beekeepers in France have abandoned beekeeping because of much reduced honey crops and the difficulty of protecting hives. The same will happen here.”
Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.
If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can. Please take care and do not disturb an active nest. Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS). Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
