Surrey Horticultural Federation Early Spring 2024 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Surrey Horticultural Federation Early Spring Newsletter!

Order your Tickets for the Surrey Horticultural Federation Spring Talk 2024 with Speaker Nick Hamilton

We’re looking forward to welcoming Horticulturist, Nick Hamilton as the speaker for our Spring Talk at 2.30pm on Sunday 17th March 2024 at Normandy Village Hall, Manor Farm, Glaziers Lane, Normandy, Guildford, Surrey, GU3 2DT.  Don’t miss out – make haste and order your tickets now – before we sell out!

Nick is the son of the late, great, legendary gardener, Geoff Hamilton.  Nick Hamilton developed his passion for gardening, aged 9, when his father purchased a derelict garden centre in Kettering.  He worked with his dad at weekends and during school holidays.  He trained at Writtle College and took a National Diploma course in commercial horticulture.  Nick’s sandwich year placement sent him to Darby Nursery Stock in Norfolk, one of the largest wholesale container nurseries in the country.  The nursery asked him to return for full time employment, once his course had ended.  Nick gained valuable experience there and at other nurseries until his father purchased a piece of land, adjacent to Barnsdale, in 1989.  This land formed the nursery and ultimately part of Barnsdale Gardens.  Nick worked closely with his father in the family business.

Nick took over the running of Barnsdale Gardens when his father Geoff died and has developed it into the inspirational garden that it is today, which is not only a credit to a great man but also to Nick’s passion, foresight and hard work.  These inspirational gardens are still run using organic and peat-free principles and are visited annually by about 30,000 people, who range from keen gardeners to non-gardeners who still enjoy a visit to a beautiful garden.  You will find Nick at Barnsdale, occupying the “hands on” role he so enjoys.

Over the years, Nick has also managed to fit in appearances on Gardeners’ World, writing books, being a regular contributor to gardening magazines, talking to gardening groups, W.I’s, etc., contributing to the various Talks Stages at major flower shows, tutoring most of the courses being run at Barnsdale, and still getting out and about, displaying in the Great Pavilion at The Chelsea Flower Show, and in the floral marquee at the Gardeners’ World Live Show.  Nick has also been the President of The Cottage Garden Society, a position he took up in 2007.

Tickets for Nick Hamilton’s talk are on sale now.  If you want to come to this special event, hurry up and order your tickets!  Please send a stamped, addressed envelope to Katharine Deaville, 8 Hookley Close, Elstead, Godalming, Surrey, GU8 6JG.  Tickets are £10 each for members of SHF affiliated societies when purchased in advance and £15 each for non-members.  Please make cheques payable to Surrey Horticultural Federation.  If we have any tickets left on the evening of the talk they will be sold for £15 on the door.

Renew Your Club or Society’s Membership of the Surrey Horticultural Federation Now!

If you’ve not done so already, it’s time to renew your Club or Society’s Membership of the Surrey Horticultural Federation.  Membership runs from 1st January 2024 until the end of December 2024.  Surrey Horticultural Federation membership is incredible value at just £10 per club, society, organisation, or group.

If your group is considering becoming a member of the Surrey Horticultural Federation, we would like to encourage you to join us!  Whether your club or society is joining as a completely new member, renewing your membership, or renewing after a lapsed period, we hope you’ll join us this year.  Here’s a link to the Surrey Horticultural Federation invoice, please send this invoice to your group’s Treasurer to pay as soon as possible – thank you.

New Judges and Lecturers’ Lists are now available

All the clubs, societies, and groups that are fully paid up members of the Surrey Horticultural Federation receive a complimentary copy of the Surrey Guild of Judges and Lecturers’ Speaker List and Judges Lists.  These lists are updated every two years.  The brand new electronic lists will be distributed via email to all Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies this month.  Please make sure that we have an up to date email address for your Programme Secretary and Chairman – so our Membership Secretary, Katharine Deaville can send all the information to the correct person – thank you.  Please note that we’re sharing the Judges and Lecturers’ lists via email to help the environment and ensure this information is easily available to you, but we ask you not to forward these lists to anyone outside of your organisation, as they are a benefit for Surrey Horticultural Federation members only.  Thank you.

NB: We always try to avoid printing unless it’s strictly necessary; however, if you don’t have access to email and need a hard copy of these lists, please let us know and we will arrange this for you.

Congratulations to Godstone Gardeners Club who celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2024!

In 1974, a small group of people interested in gardening started to meet on an informal basis in Godstone.  Very soon these became regular monthly meetings for exchange of information, ideas and views.  These meetings took place in the White Hart Barn in Godstone – where Godstone Gardeners Club’s meetings are still held today.  Soon a full yearly programme was in place – Speakers have included Roy Lancaster, Pippa Greenwood, and Fergus Garrett from Great Dixter.  Godstone Gardeners Club hold Plant Sales, Shows, Coffee mornings, and trips to gardens – local and national.

In 2000, the first year the R.H.S. used Ranelagh Gardens at Chelsea, Godstone Gardeners Club entered the Courtyard Garden class and were surprised to have their design accepted.  The group went on to win a Bronze Medal.  They remember Chelsea being very hard work, especially the break down day when it rained, and rained and rained!   Godstone Gardeners Club also entered the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in the Hanging Basket and Window Box class where they achieved a Silver Medal.

Since then, Godstone Gardeners Club have been on several holidays to various parts of the country to visit gardens and enjoy each others company.

This year there will be a special Garden Party to celebrate 50 years of Godstone Gardeners Club.  To mark the occasion, Godstone Gardeners Club will be placing an oak bench in the garden at the White Hart Barn with an explanatory plaque.  A full Programme is in place for 2024.  We send our congratulations on your anniversary and hope that Godstone Gardeners Club will continue for many years to come.

Sad News

We’ve just been told the sad news of  the recent passing of John Goddard.  John recently died at the age of 93.  The name John H. J. Goddard will be familiar to many of the Surrey Horticultural Federation’s affiliated Societies, as John was a highly respected judge of Narcissi and other flowers.  John was a Narcissi expert who was able to recognise most daffodil varieties by sight and he exhibited successfully at local, South East, and National Level.

John Goddard is pictured with his prize winning begonias.John grew these for many years, usually 6 in his greenhouse. David volunteered to collect the plants when he was unable to carry them. In the first year David squashed one in together with his exhibits. He learnt his lesson and arrived with an empty car the next year. David persuaded John that the plants looked so good to enter 3 in a collection of pot plants, which John is pictured standing by, holding Banstead Horticultural Society’s prestigious Blue Ribbon, which is only awarded to outstanding exhibits (and our judges know not to award them lightly). 83 awarded last year!!
David has received tributes to John from fellow judges and R.H.S committee members.
John was a member of the R.H.S. trials committee for narcissi and tulips for many years and and a judge and exhibitor at R.H.S shows

David Peterken, the Show Secretary and Vice Chairman of Banstead Horticultural Society told me, ‘John assisted all our exhibitors generously and helped us set high standards for daffodils at Banstead.  Last year many of the daffodils exhibited at our Spring Flower Show were better than some of the daffodils on display at the National Daffodil Show at Wisley.  John bred the ‘Banstead Village’ daffodil which is planted around his local village.’

The Chairman of David’s local allotment association told him that John was introduced to him as the British authority on Narcissi.

John Goddard‘s funeral is at All Saints’ Church, Banstead at 12 noon on Monday 11th March 2024.

News from the National Garden Scheme Surrey Team

Last year the Surrey NGS gardens made over £100,000 for the NGS charities.  Many of you will have arranged visits for your local gardening or horticultural groups and it was great to see so many of you – thank you all for your support.

Last year we also distributed nearly 35,000 of the Surrey NGS booklets.  This year we would like to offer your group a supply of these booklets, so if you would like some please contact Sarah or Janis and let us know how many you want and where they can bring them.  Our contact details are Sarah on 07932445868 or sarah.wilson@ngs.org.uk or Janis on 07478025188 or Janis.raubiska@ngs.org.uk.

This year we have some new gardens to visit and in order the help you book your arranged visits you can access our ‘Arranged visits’ pages on the NGS website, using the following link: https://ngs.org.uk/surrey-by-arrangement/

April sees gardens really coming alive, with open days across the county.  On Easter Monday you can visit Moleshill House in Cobham, Shieling in Kingswood, Timber Hill in Chobham, and Vann in Hambledon.  Four very different but very lovely spring gardens.  For more details, visit ngs.org.uk.  Update from Sarah Wilson, ACO and publicity lead for NGS Surrey

The Dig It Radio Show is Lost but Gardening is Alive on Local Radio!

Jean Griffin has asked me to let all Societies and clubs know that although the BBC Radio Surrey Dig It Gardening programme has been lost, Gardening Radio is still alive and well, albeit in a different format.

Pat Marsh hosts a programme on BBC Local Radio, which includes a gardening section.  The show runs from 10am – 2pm each Sunday on BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Sussex, and BBC Radio SurreyNB: The gardening section of the show is on air from 10.30am to 12 midday.  If you want to ask a gardening question, please email sunday.gardening@bbc.co.uk.  Remember to include your phone number on any emails you send, so the gardening experts can chat with you on-air and can ask for any other information they may require to help answer your query.

Upcoming Workshops with Sarah Foss at Ecolocal

Some of our members expressed an interest in attending local workshops, so I’m sharing details of these events run by Sarah Foss at Ecolocal.

Spring Propagation: Saturday 23rd March 2024 from 10.30am until 3pm
The art of plant propagation is as old as civilisation. With techniques learned and adapted from nature, we can save money and have more of our favourite plants, with enough left over to share with friends.
This one-day beginners’ workshop covers a range of techniques that can be undertaken as the days start to lengthen..
You’ll learn about:
· Indoor and outdoor seed sowing of flowers and vegetables
· Softwood cuttings
· Layering of shrubs and climbers
· Division of bulbs and herbaceous perennials
With lots of information and a practical grounding in the basics, this workshop will help new gardeners fill their plots with flowers and vegetables in the months ahead. Price: £35

Container Gardening: Saturday 20th April 2024 from 10.30am until 3pm
Do you want to make good use of an otherwise wasted area of paving? Do you only have a small courtyard or balcony in which to grow? Or perhaps you are renting and not able to make permanent changes to the outdoor space? Growing in containers is an excellent way to make the most of the space available.
In this one-day workshop our RHS qualified tutor will cover everything you need to know to keep your containers looking great and productive all year:
– container choice,
– compost types,
– watering tricks,
– fertilisers,
– plant choice and maintenance.
With some practical work, lots of take-home information and ideas for more experienced gardeners and novices alike; this workshop will help you create your own unique container garden. Price: £35

All workshops are held at The Victorian Walled Garden, Ecolocal, The Lodge, Honeywood walk, Carshalton, SM5 3NX. Within the grounds of Carshalton Ecology Centre, by the ponds.  For more information and to book your place on these or any of the other Ecolocal workshops, visit their website.
