The Surrey Horticultural Federation Inter-Club Quiz and AGM is on Sunday 1st November 2026 at 2.30pm at East Horsley Village Hall

We hope you’ll join us for the SURREY HORTICULTURAL FEDERATION INTER-CLUB QUIZ & A.G.M
on SUNDAY 1st November 2026 at 2.30pm
at East Horsley Village Hall, Kingston Avenue, East Horsley, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT24 6QT.

We hope to have a very quick AGM (Agenda follows) and then on with the Quiz.  NB: Please recruit up to three club members for a team table.

Our quiz is a fun and relaxed event – no one has to stand up or read out their answers.  Our Treasurer and Membership Secretary, Katharine Deaville has taken on the role of Quiz Master, Katharine has promised to make the quiz questions easier!  Three representatives from each club form a team.  Teams sit together; each member has their own sheet of paper to record their answers.  Teams can confer and all answers are filled in on quiz sheets.  Our new Quizmaster, Katharine Deaville will read out the questions and provide a multiple choice of answers for participants to choose from – it’s rather like ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’.  You can guess if you’re not sure of the answer, and teams can confer.  If one team member knows the answer you can all choose the same and pick up maximum points, or you can all choose different answers if you wish.

Team supporters and visitors from any club are welcome to attend – there are cash prizes for teams and prizes for the best answers from the audience!  The Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz is a relaxed and fun afternoon – we hope you’ll join us.

In August Milford & Godalming u3a’s Gardening Group visited Jack’s Garden in Chiddingfold

Thank you to Liz Simmons who sent in this lovely picture of the Milford & Godalming u3a Gardening Group and told us about their interesting visit to Jack’s Garden in Chiddingfold.

A group of fifteen members of Milford & Godalming u3a Gardening Group paid a visit to Jack’s Garden in Chiddingfold in August.  Jack’s Garden has been featured twice on BBC’s Gardeners’ World and has been the subject of an article in Gardens Illustrated Magazine.

Jack bought the house with a one acre garden, which at the time was inhabited by goats.  In the challenging terrain Jack saw (as the great Capability Brown remarked), ‘a space full of possibilities!’  Therefore about 48 years ago Jack began terracing and making paths down the steep sided valley.  On the very hot day this group visited they were all very envious of the water that continuously flows at the bottom of garden.

Jack describes it as a jungle garden.  His garden features a vast range of plants, including: bananas, Tetrapanax, 20ft high Golden Bamboo, tree ferns, Ensetes, Colocasia, Paulownia, Ricinus communis – the castor oil plant, and twenty varieties of Canna!

Jack is hoping that his garden will become a Community Garden as, (due to his advancing years) he does not want to see his beloved garden returning to nature when he is no longer able to care for it.

Help RHS scientists investigate Tilia leaf blotch: an emerging disease of lime trees

Tilia leaf blotch – photo credit Louise Jones.

Although Tilia leaf blotch has been described in parts of mainland Europe and North America, there’s very little evidence of it having previously been recorded in the UK.  Following repeated observations on lime trees in Surrey, along with further reports from Kent, West Sussex and RHS Garden Wisley, the RHS Plant Health scientists are working to identify the pathogen responsible and better understand its distribution across the country.

Discovering how widespread Tilia leaf blotch is and understanding its impact on tree health is important for the future of our much-loved  lime trees.

Tilia leaf blotch – photo credit Louise Jones.

What symptoms should you look for?

  • Dark leaf blotches with distinctive curly or spidery-like edges
  • Small blotches that merge to form larger patches
  • Yellowing or browning leaves
  • Premature leaf drop

If you’ve spotted these symptoms on a lime tree, please click here to report your sighting in the RHS survey: https://survey.rhs.org.uk/lime-leaf-blotch

The RHS Plant Pathologist and Scientist, Louise Jones will be giving a talk on lime trees and her research at RHS Garden Wisley’s Hilltop Centre on Wednesday 23rd September 2026 at 11:30am.  This event is free for RHS members and is included in the ticket price for paying visitors to RHS Wisley – just turn up on the day to attend this interesting and informative talk.  If you’re interested in learning more about this emerging disease, this is the event to attend – find more details of this and the other talks offered at RHS Wisley by clicking here.

Squire’s Garden Centres has raised an impressive £23,577 for local charities through its annual ‘Charity of the Year’ programme!

Sam Dickson, Managing Director – Squire’s Garden Centres (centre), with colleagues unveiling amount raised across all centres over the last year.

Squire’s Garden Centres has raised an impressive £23,577 for local charities through its annual ‘Charity of the Year’ programme, helping support causes in the communities surrounding its 17 garden centres.  Celebrating its fifteenth year, Squire’s initiative sees each of Squire’s garden centres partner with a local charity chosen by the staff.  Each charity is carefully selected against specific criteria – funds raised must remain within the local area and directly benefit local people and communities, and support causes that align with Squire’s commitment to making a positive difference where it matters most.  Fundraising activities varied from centre to centre and included raffle prizes, collection boxes, festive fundraising through Squire’s Christmas Grottos, community events, and customer celebrations.  The programme helps shine a spotlight on the valuable work undertaken by local charities.

Sam Dickson, Managing Director – Squire’s Garden Centres, said: “Being part of our local communities has always been incredibly important to Squire’s.  This fantastic fundraising total is only possible thanks to the enthusiasm of our colleagues and the generosity of our customers, who continue to support so many worthwhile local causes.  Together, we’ve helped charities that provide essential services, support families and individuals, and improve the lives of people in the communities we serve.  We are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved and look forward to supporting another wonderful group of charities over the coming year.”

Alongside its local Charity of the Year partnerships, Squire’s continues to support national horticultural charities including Greenfingers Charity, which creates inspiring gardens for children’s hospices, and Perennial, the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people in horticulture who are facing every day or life-changing challenges.

Squire’s New Charity of the Year Partners for 2026-27

Squire’s Garden Centres are delighted to announce their Charity of the Year partners for the coming year, running from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2027:

Through the Charity of the Year programme, Squire’s hopes to raise vital funds, increase awareness and build meaningful community partnerships that create lasting local impact.

Small Woodland Management

Woodland with bluebells

Saturday 17th October, Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve, Mill Way, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8QA, 10am-3pm

Join tutor, Ross Packman, for a one-day introductory course on Small Woodland Management. The morning session will concentrate on everything from basic woodland ecology to applying for management grants. After an early lunch, you will then head out into the ancient woodland of Nower Wood, where you will observe habitat management in action.

We realise that each parcel of land is unique, therefore we encourage attendees, prior to the course, to pass on any specific questions they may have, which we can then cover in a Q&A on the day.

This course is targeted at those who are thinking of investing in, or managing a small woodland, or those who already have done so.

  • Mobility – Gentle walk in the reserve on uneven ground
  • What to bring – Please bring a packed lunch and suitable footwear for walking around the reserve. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided.
  • Bicycle parking – There is a place to safely lock your bike.
  • Facilities – Toilets, including an accessible toilet are available

Practical Skills for Small Woodland Management

A volunteer using a bow saw

Saturday 21st November, Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve, KT22 8QA, 10am-3pm

Owning a small woodland can be a magical experience, but these vital habitats require active management to remain biodiverse and healthy. On this course, you will develop the practical skills and techniques required to become proficient custodians of your own small woodland.

On this one-day course, there will be a brief discussion regarding basic woodland ecology, seasonal limitations, personal protective equipment, useful power tools and their appropriate use. You will then venture into the woods to learn how to use hand tools to ‘coppice’ appropriate species and deliver beneficial ‘thinning’ through the felling of small trees. Finally, you will gain experience in building deer ‘exclosures’, dead hedges and wind rows.

Your tutor, Ross Packman, has gained practical woodland management experience with organisations including the National Trust and both the Surrey and Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trusts, and is keen to help guide you on your exciting journey.

  • Mobility – You will need some flexibility and strength for the practical aspect of the course, as well as walking on uneven ground around the reserve.
  • What to bring – Please bring a packed lunch. All tools and safety equipment will be provided.
  • Parking information – There is plenty of free parking available.
  • Bicycle parking – There is a safe space to lock your bike.
  • Facilities – Toilets, including an accessible toilet are available

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Thank you to Entomologist, Andrew Halstead for updating us on the Asian Hornet.  Andrew says, “Last year there was a record 162 nests found in England, mainly in the south East around the Channel ports; Ireland and the Scilly Isles also had their first nests.  Some of the English nests were not found before they had time to produce and release next years queens.  Together with queens hitching a ride on cross-Channel transport, 2026 is likely to be another busy year for the Defra staff that currently deal with reported sightings.  Sooner or later it is likely that Defra will decide that Asian hornet is now here to stay and they will withdraw support from the eradication programme.  We will then be in the same situation as France and other European countries where AH is well established.  An Asian hornet nest is estimated to consume about 11.5kg of insects during the summer-autumn, so the impact on bees and other insects will be considerable.  Many beekeepers in France have abandoned beekeeping because of much reduced honey crops and the difficulty of protecting hives.  The same will happen here.”

Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.
