Surrey Horticultural Federation Autumn 2024 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Surrey Horticultural Federation Autumn newsletter!

Please share this newsletter with your members and help them stay up to date with all the events happening in Surrey and the surrounding areas.

The Surrey Horticultural Federation Inter-Club Quiz and AGM

We hope you’ll join us for the SURREY HORTICULTURAL FEDERATION INTER-CLUB QUIZ & A.G.M
on SUNDAY 3rd November 2024 at 2.30pm
at East Horsley Village Hall, Kingston Avenue, East Horsley, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT24 6QT.

We hope to have a very quick AGM (Agenda follows) and then on with the Quiz.

NB: Please recruit up to three club members for a team table.

Our quiz is a fun and relaxed event – no one has to stand up or read out their answers.  Three representatives from each club form a team.  Teams sit together; each member has their own sheet of paper to record their answers.  Teams can confer and all answers are filled in on quiz sheets.  Our Quizmaster, John Negus reads out the questions and gives a multiple choice of answers for participants to choose from – it’s rather like ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’.   You can guess if you’re not sure of the answer, and teams can confer.  If one team member knows the answer you can all choose the same and pick up maximum points, or you can all choose different answers if you wish.

Team supporters and visitors from any club are welcome to attend – there are cash prizes for teams and prizes for the best answers from the audience!  The Surrey Horticultural Federation Quiz is a relaxed and fun afternoon – we hope you’ll join us.

The National Vegetable Society Surrey District Association are looking for new committee members

The National Vegetable Society Surrey District Association are looking for new committee members to join their friendly team and help run meetings in 2025 and beyond.  The group usually meets at East Horsley Village Hall and already has a Treasurer and a Programme Secretary, but needs help at in-person meetings with tasks that include introducing speakers, making tea and coffee, running a raffle, etc.  This group are ideally looking for a number of people to come forward and join their welcoming team.  If you’re interested in finding out more, please email me, beth@pumpkinbeth.com.  Thank you.

Unlock Funding for Community Projects with Your Fund Surrey

Does your group need a laptop, some software, or conservation equipment?  Perhaps a local school would benefit from a wildlife pond, or a green wall to clean the air, and your group could help?  These are just some of the grants awarded through the Your Fund Surrey funding pot.  The Surrey County Council fund is available until January, so join their funding webinar on Thursday 3rd October 2024 from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.  This event is hosted jointly with the Greener Futures Team at Surrey County Council, to find out how your group could secure funding for project like these and many more – here’s a link.

Autumn and Winter Propagation Workshop

Bob Flowerdew will be giving a talk to Woodham and New Haw Horticultural Club on Friday 1st November 2024

On Friday 1st November 2024 at 7.45pmBob Flowerdew will be giving a talk on ‘No-work Gardening‘ to Woodham and New Haw Horticultural Club at All Saints New Haw Church Hall, New Haw, Addlestone, Surrey, KT15 3DH.

Bob is one of Britain’s leading organic gardeners.  He has written three dozen books which have been published in many languages.  For three decades, Bob has been a regular panel member of BBC Radio4’s Gardener’s Question Time and he was a presenter on Gardeners’ World on TV with Geoff Hamilton.  Following in the tradition of the Flowerdew family (who have farmed in Norfolk from Tudor times) Bob cultivates nearly an acre of garden in Norfolk, where he lives with his wife and twin daughters.

Bob came to horticulture following a career in finance, and after much adventuring and travelling.  He is one of the few gardening authors to be featured on the front page of the New York Times.  Visitors are very welcome to join Woodham and New Haw Horticultural Club for what promises to be a very entertaining and informative evening.  Entry is £5, which includes tea/coffee and homemade cake.  Parking is on site but if full, plenty of parking is available on the side roads, opposite the church hall (with a pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights).

Giant Book Sale in Memory of Jean & Jeffery Wheatley to be held on 2nd November 2024 at Elstead United Reformed Church

There will be a Giant Book Sale in memory of Jean and Jeffery Wheatley from Elstead.  Those who knew Jean and Jeffery will remember their book collections and interests, which include ornithology, poetry, horticulture, and natural history.  The couple used to hold book sales to raise funds for the church, which was a core part of their lives.  The family have decided to honour Jean and Jeffery by donating their books to the church and to hold a giant book sale in their memory.  Jean and Jeffery’s daughter Clare knows her parents would be delighted that their treasured library will go to good homes.

Proceeds from this special event will be divided between Elstead United Reformed Church, where they had been members for the last 28 years, (Jean was a former Church secretary and Elder, and Jeffery was the Church Secretary) along with Phyllis Tuckwell, who supported Jean in her last months.

This special book sale will be held on Saturday 2nd November 2024, from 10am until 2pm at Elstead United Reformed Church, Milford Road, Elstead, Surrey, GU8 6HP.  There will be refreshments.  Clare will also hold a Fairtrade stall, where attendees can stock up on Fairtrade goodies, (plus, dare I say it, Christmas cards) while refilling your bookcases for the darker evenings.

At this event, you’ll have the unique opportunity to acquire specialised book collections on topics that were dear to Jean and Jeffery.

  • Ornithology – Books on birds from the UK and worldwide.  Birds became Jeffery’s passion, after Jean introduced him to bird watching.
  • Poetry – a large variety of poetry collections which reflect Jeffery’s enjoyment of poetry, both as a reader and a writer of poetry himself.
  • Horticulture – a large number of books on gardening, horticulture, and growing for food reflects the couple’s interest in their garden and Jean’s enthusiasm for her vegetable patch, which she created when they moved to Elstead.
  • Natural History – Books on animals, minerals, bugs, and beetles, pond life, and sea creatures.  Plus books inherited by my parents from a friend with a keen interest in all things fungi.
  • There will be the opportunity to purchase books on travel, faith, and literature, including some French-language volumes.
  • Books on finance, economics, mathematics, and telecommunications are also available, reflecting Jeffery’s working life.

Clare will also welcome any book donations you would like to give (after 15 October 2024) to really make this a giant book sale!  Books for all ages are welcome.  The family are keen to make this book sale the best one yet!  Please contact Clare Fryer by telephone 07811989456 or email c_fryer@ntlworld.com for details of how and when to bring donations to the church.

Timothy Walker will be giving The Arts Society East Surrey Area Group a talk about Fine Art in the Garden on Friday 8th November 2024

Timothy Walker is a lecturer and horticultural expert, and a well known and very entertaining speaker.  Timothy will give the Arts Society East Surrey Area Group two talks on how artists and gardeners paint with a similar colour palette, and how gardening has changed over the last 150 years, since colour was first introduced into the formal gardens of Europe.  He explains how Gertrude Jekyll herself was inspired by JMW Turner, and how garden borders and contemporary paintings have evolved along similar lines.  Timothy will show Attendees how the influences of Rothko and Pollock can be seen in the modern gardens of today.  Come and be inspired!  This event takes place from 10am until 1pm on on Friday 8th November 2024 at The Menuhin Hall, Cobham Road, Stoke D’Abernon, Great Bookham, Cobham, Surrey, KT11 3QQ.  Tickets are £25, to purchase tickets, please click here.

Sunday Gardening Programme on BBC Radio Surrey

Don’t miss the Sunday Gardening programme on BBC Radio Surrey from 10:30am until 12 noon.  Each week, the show have a segment where they promote gardening events in the local community; from talks to workshops, from fairs to meet-ups.  No matter if it’s big or small, ticketed or free, the team want to hear from you and your society about what events you’ve got planned.

If you have any events to promote, then get in touch via email: Sunday.gardening@bbc.co.uk.  It’s possible you could also have the opportunity to come on the programme and tell the listeners about your group and what it is you do.

Additionally, please do let your members know that if they ever have any gardening questions, they can reach out to the Sunday Gardening programme via email Sunday.gardening@bbc.co.uk or call the team from 10am on Sundays on 0800 587 1046.  The Sunday Gardening programme are joined every week by a gardening expert who is ready to answer any question you may have.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

Speaker Feedback

Has a speaker given a talk to your society over the past few months?  Please share your confidential feedback by emailing me your thoughts, both positive and negative on the speakers you booked last year, and I will share your feedback privately (via email) with the other clubs that are members of the SHF – thank you.  My email is beth@pumpkinbeth.com.
NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.

Publicising Your Club or Society’s Events

If your club or society is a fully paid up member of the Surrey Horticultural Federation, I will be delighted to add your society or club’s events to our website. Please email me, beth@pumpkinbeth.com.  To successfully publicise your event, I need to know:

  • What date your event takes place.
  • What time your event starts.
  • Where your event is held.
  • What type of event you’re holding?  If it’s a talk, please let me know the name of the speaker and their talk title.
  • Finally, I need to know the entrance fee for non-members and visitors.
