East Surrey Groups Meeting

On the 26th March 2022, the Surrey Horticultural Federation’s clubs and societies that are based in East Surrey met up at the Methodist Church Hall, in Redhill for a special meeting to share ideas on how to encourage and support their members.

Those in attendance were:  Janet Arm (Chair of SHF); Debbie Fox (Chair GR); Karen Murray (Secretary GR); Gina Hewitt (Committee Member GR and Merstham HS); Pauline Bier (Wallington, Carshalton & Beddington HS); Dave Pilgrim (Merstham HS); Lucy Halahan (Leigh & District HS); Janet Manning (Caterham & District HS); Jilly Ball (Hurst Green Gardening Club); Diana Beck (Banstead HS); Morag Roulston (Limpsfield, Oxted and District HS).

Apologies:  Nutfield Gardening Society; Bletchingley HS; Sanderstead HS; Godstone Gardeners’ Club; Ewell Horticultural Assoc.; Kingswood, Walton & Tadworth HS.

Debbie Fox welcomed everyone and introduced Janet Arm, Chair of the Surrey Horticultural Federation who chaired the meeting.  Those present introduced themselves and the group they represented.  Each group member was given time to give an overview of their club or society, detailing the number of members that they have, how they fared over the pandemic, their greatest achievements and any difficulties they face.  Those in attendance discussed the events they hold, how they keep in touch with their members, whether they used zoom or held online events, their typical annual programme, what talks or shows they have arranged, any difficulties they experience and the successes they enjoyed had to date.

A discussion about technical IT support revealed that some clubs have committee members that are able to help with IT but others are don’t have this expertise.  Everyone felt that they really needed help in this area.  It was suggested that groups talk to The Volunteer Centres and offer a volunteer role for an IT assistant.

Debbie Fox closed the meeting, noting that some clubs are growing their memberships. She thanked Karen Murray for note taking.

Next steps
  • Those with policies, such as on GDPR and roles and responsibilities (Banstead HS), to share them via the SHF/ Growing Redhill.
  • Each club to make progress on sources of IT know-how e.g., approach Volunteer Centres that may offer training or enable recruitment of volunteer IT assistance.
  • The group will meet again in 6 months’ time: proposed dates: 24th September 2022; 8th or 15th October 2022.

Sad News

The Surrey Horticultural Federation is sorry to report that the wife of our auditor, John Manches, sadly passed away recently.  The funeral was held on Wednesday 8thJune 2022, and the Federation was represented by Kathy Deaville.  Our condolences have been given to John.

We have also just heard of the death of well-known judge and lecturer, David (Dusty) Miller.  Dusty was a member of Guildford Fuchsia Group.  Dusty had a passion for pelargoniums and fuchsias; he was delighted to pass on his knowledge of these plants to clubs when lecturing or judging.  Dusty was a great supporter of the Federation, and a committee member for several years.  The Federation has passed on their condolences to David’s family.  Dusty Miller’s funeral takes place on the 12th July 2022.  For more details, please click here.

SHF 2022 Club Subscriptions

Many thanks to all those clubs who have paid their 2022 subscription. If you still haven’t renewed your membership for 2022, we would appreciate payment ASAP.  Surrey Horticultural Federation membership is incredibly good value at just £10 per year, for each club or society. You can find details of how to renew on the website: https://surreyhorticulturalfederation.org/news/membership-renewal/ or email our Treasurer, Katharine Deaville, kathy.deaville@gmail.com.

Publicising Your Events

I would be delighted to advertise all of the Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies’ events on the Surrey Horticultural Federation’s website.  The Surrey Horticultural Federation’s website is exclusively for our members’ events.

Please email me (beth@pumpkinbeth.com) the details of your upcoming events. To publicise your event successfully, I need to know:

  • What kind of event it is?
  • Where your event will be held?
  • What time it starts?
  • Is your event free for members?
  • How much will it cost non-members to attend?

Please note that we only publicise events for Societies, Clubs, Groups, & Associations that are members of the Surrey Horticultural Federation – so if you haven’t renewed your 2022 membership, please do so – here’s the form: https://surreyhorticulturalfederation.org/news/membership-renewal/

Upcoming Events

The Surrey Horticultural Federation’s website has an events page that lists the events for all Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs.  I update the website regularly; it is the best source to find talks and other events for clubs across Surrey.  Below is a list of events scheduled for the next few months (see our calendar in full here).

Please keep the speaker feedback confidential within your committee – do not publish this information online, but do please share the rest of this email with your members.

I wish you and all your members a very happy growing season ahead.

Best wishes to you all
Beth
