Summer Newsletter 2017

These gardens have never been opened to the public before, but now are especially for SHF clubs. Over the past few years the owners have created several gardens within a 3 acre walled garden, including a formal terrace, a rose garden, Italian garden, wildflower meadow with trees, a dry garden and much more. To the front of the house there is a woodland area with pond and tree walks. Wheelchair access but some slopes and steps.

So that we can have an idea of numbers, if club Secretaries could inform the SHF secretary of roughly the number likely to attend this would be a great help!

Full details on the event page.

This year we were taken into the world of Herbs with Jekka MacVicar, and what an interesting and informative afternoon it turned out to be.  She talked about the history of herb use as medicine as well in cooking, and showed a wide selection of photos of plants and described what they were used for.

Unfortunately she was waiting for a new print run of her million selling book, The Complete Herb Book, but this can be found on her website, or on Amazon.  Her nursery also has several Open Days in 2017, including 5th /6th May, 2nd /3rd June, 7th /8th July and 1st/ 2nd September.  There are also two special days  – 5th August in aid of the RHS Apprenticeship scheme (entry £5 for RHS members ) and 6th September for the NGS (£5 entry).  All these Open Days provide an opportunity for visitors to view the Herbetum and purchase herb plants, and Jekka herself hosts mini tours (half an hour) which visitors can join and learn more about the history behind the herbs.

Now who do we get for next year?  Any ideas to Janet please!!!

DATES 2017 – Council Meetings:

Onslow Village Hall (Guildford) Committee Room: Fridays 2nd June, 20th Oct. and 1st December

Normandy Village Hall, Sunday 29th October, 2017

Please note that the quiz is a light hearted one – though not always easy! Following a couple of complaints that the winners last year had a third member from outside to make up the number we would like to clarify that three members from one club must form a team, though your club can enter more than one team.
