Surrey Horticultural Federation Summer 2023 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the Surrey Horticultural Federation Summer Newsletter!

Surrey Horticultural Federation Garden Visit to ‘Grattons’ in Dunsfold

We are very grateful indeed to Sheri Sticpewich, who has kindly agreed to open her wonderful garden ‘Grattons’ in Dunsfold, exclusively for Surrey Horticultural Federation clubs and societies from 2.30pm until 4.30pm on Sunday 2nd July 2023!

Please add this date to your diaries and share this information with all your members – we hope to see you there!

Show Entry Cards, Prize Cards and Show Stationary

The Royal Horticultural Society’s Mail Order department has sadly closed, as a consequence, the RHS are no longer able to supply Affiliated Societies with show stationery items.  What can you do if you relied on the RHS show stationary?

Elstead Garden Club print their own entry cards and buy in prize cards from Perennial (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Highly Commended – they cost £7.99 for 50, with free delivery over £50).  Perennial also offer ‘certificates of merit’, ‘diploma for excellence in horticulture’, and ‘novices award for merit in horticulture show award’ certificates.  These purchases help to support Perennial – a wonderful charity that help people that work (including retired gardeners) in horticulture.  Here’s a link to Perennial’s website where you can purchase online.

The Royal Horticultural Society has been supporting horticultural societies and gardening clubs for over 100 years.  Today there are nearly 2,700 groups affiliated to the RHS, making it the largest network of gardening clubs in the UK. The scheme represents an enormously diverse mix, including specialist plant societies, allotment groups, community gardening initiatives, and overseas gardening groups.

The Royal Horticultural Society have PDF’s of a class winner’s certificate and a junior competitor’s award of merit in their tool kit for affiliated societies – please contact the RHS for more details.

When I emailed this newsletter to the Surrey Horticultural Federation gardening clubs and horticultural societies, I attached a quote that a local printing company gave for producing show cards and I also attached an example of one of the certificates that Tilford Gardening Club use at their flower shows.

If you have any ideas for show stationary or anything else that will help the other gardening clubs and horticultural societies, please let me know and I will share your suggestions in my next newsletter.

Surrey Wildlife Trust

Surrey Wildlife Trust have announced their brand new Community Champion Awards to celebrate communities who are making a difference by helping wildlife in their local area.

The award scheme recognises contributions across three categories: Emerging Talent, Rising Star and High-Flyer.

If you are part of a community who are carrying out nature-based activities, helping to tackle the nature and climate crises, or supporting others in taking action, we encourage you to make a nomination.  To shine a light on your group’s achievements, nominate your community group for an award.  Please complete the online nomination form by Sunday 2nd July 2023.  Find out more information on Surrey Wildlife Trust’s website.
