GARDEN VISIT 2018 – Sunday 24th June, 2.00 – 4.30 pm

We are very pleased to advise that we have been able to arrange a visit to Shalford House, Kingsley Green, West Sussex GU27 3LW (just over the border near Haslemere, off the A286 towards Midhurst). Poster available soon, but PLEASE PUT THIS DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW!

Owned by Sir Vernon and Lady Ellis since 1991, when the grounds were covered with fir trees and overgrown chestnut coppices, some 1500 trees were removed and garden designer Sally Court was called in to create the layout and planting plan. Set on a south facing slope, a retaining wall was built to allow a flat lawn from the house, a stream put in down to the existing pond and fresh soil brought in for new garden beds. New areas were created including sunken and terrace gardens, and pergolas added to give shape and form.
Later developments include a prairie garden with waves of grasses and perennials, as well as a 30 acre arboretum of mostly native trees. Head Gardener James Stevenson says ‘ We develop things together, but I like interesting plants and overall effects of bold combinations of flowers’.

The garden is open through the NGS a couple of times a year, but they have offered to open it specially for the Surrey Federation on this day – a charge will be made to go to a charity of Sir Vernon’s choice.
