Early Summer Newsletter 2019

Shamley Wood house – This large private garden will be open this day exclusively for SHF Clubs.

For details, see the event page.

If you can let the Secretary know roughly how many in your club are likely to come to the Open Garden that would be great help in providing the teas! Please also check that your events and club contact details are up to date on our website – there are a lot of clubs to keep track of and it’s easy to miss some!

In early March we had our Spring Talk, which was ‘Revive your Garden’ with horticulturalist and BBC Presenter Nick Bailey. Although this was an interesting talk, he did go through it very rapidly, and several people mentioned that the pictures on the screen weren’t named so if you wanted to write down what it was you had to listen very carefully, or ask afterwards! Nick has said that this comment has been noted, and he would try to label the pictures shown in future.

Our next Spring talk will be on Thursday 12th March 2020, when we have booked Adam Frost, a garden designer and also a presenter on Gardener’s World. We reckon this will be very popular, so get your tickets as soon as they are released in the autumn. By popular demand we will also have Chris Beardshaw again, but he is fully booked for 2020 and 2021, so this talk will be in March 2022!

We regret to announce the recent death of Brenda Girdlestone, who I think many of you will have known and appreciated as a flower show judge.

Good news of our Vice President Brian Deaville, who is back home and doing well after his recent illness.

The Surrey Guild of Judges and Lecturers think it might be a good idea to have a Schedule Secretaries Meeting to try and get some consistency in show schedules. This would hopefully help exhibitors not to gain the dreaded N.A.S. If you are interested, could you email Sheila at info@shjl.co.uk giving your name and what month you would prefer a meeting to be arranged for, possibly in one of the rooms at Normandy Village Hall?

Several clubs have open garden days, including the following:-

Headley Open Gardens 2019 – “THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE”

Many of the gardens from 2017 will be open, as well as some new ones … Saturday & Sunday 8th & 9th June 2019 – 10:30 am to 5 pm each day. All proceeds will go to a fund for urgently needed work to improve the drainage at Headley Village Hall. Lunches and teas available each day. Plenty of free parking. Tickets will be on sale at the Church Centre , £7.50 (for both days), children under 12 free.

Tickets £5 in advance (children free) from 20th May at The Vineries Garden Centre, Wishing Well, Bungalow Stores, and Old Barn Office; or £6 from Old Barn Hall on the day (Church Road, KT23 3PQ) with garden maps, refreshments, plant sale, stalls and raffle available.
Free mini bus service between gardens – assistance dogs only.

We would like to welcome Dorking Allotments and Liss Horticultural Society who have joined the Surrey Horticultural Federation this year – perhaps if they are in your area you would like to make contact and offer some joint events?
Sadly Sandhurst Club and Woking and District Gardening Group have resigned, but we have still got 97 clubs!
Unfortunately we still haven’t received payment from the following clubs, Bookham and Fetcham (now checking), Dorking Gardeners (now checking), Fernhurst, Hale, Limpsfield, Rowledge, and Surrey Chrysanthemum – so in case your cheque has gone astray, or you have misplaced the invoice, could you please contact us?

Grayshaw and Yeo Gardening Company are a local company based in Surrey looking to encourage more people into horticulture. They take people who are passionate about gardening and help them become professional gardeners. Their gardeners include retired people looking for extra income, or people who are thinking about starting a career in the industry. They also provide mentoring, training and help with funding for courses that will develop a gardener’s knowledge.

So, if you are interested, or equally if you would like help with your garden, please go to their website: www.gygardening.co.uk or phone Emily on 07799-292-573 or Judith on 07917-208-655.

DATES 2019

Sunday November 17th at Normandy Village Hall,– please note change of date!
