Philip Barralet by Lucy Baker, Secretary Pirbright Horticultural Society

Geoff Peach, Elizabeth Barralet, Sallie Barker, Philip Barralet, and Hilary Askew.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the recent death of Philip Barralet.  Philip has served the village of Pirbright in many capacities over the last 50 years.  He ran a plant nursery for some years in the village and many residents were his customers.  He was Chairman of Pirbright Parish Council for some years and in that capacity was instrumental in the village being twinned with the village of Cagny (Calvados) France.  He was the second Chairman of Pirbright Twinning Association and was present at a great many of the exchange visits between Pirbright and Cagny which have taken place in the last 33 years, and are still continuing to this day.

One of Philip’s great love was horticulture and he was Chairman of Pirbright Horticultural Society for many years.  He presided over the Annual Show every July.  The current Chairman and Committee are at present realising what a lot of work this entailed!  In 2022, a tree was planted on Pirbright Green to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.  In 2024, to commemorate 125 years of the Horticultural Society, a Celebration Tea was held.  The event was attended by both previous and current members, some of the judges from the Shows, and the Mayor of Guildford.  Philip Barralet will be sorely missed by his family and the residents of Pirbright.

Our Chairman, Janet Arm’s report on the Surrey Horticultural Federation visit to Lower House, Bowlhead Green

The rose covering the front of Lower House is called ‘Mermaid’.

On one of the hottest days of the year (I don’t know how we manage it, but somehow we seem to often select open days with the hottest weather) the Surrey Horticultural Federation was welcomed by owner Georgina Harvey to her beautiful garden, which is tucked away, surrounded by the Witley Park Estate in the Surrey Hills, at Bowlhead Green.  Lower House garden was originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll, and the original drawing of the gardens was out on display for us to see.  Georgina has wonderfully recreated some of the garden’s original features, but has also added some rare trees and plants into the mix.   We had hoped for more visitors, but 83 members took the opportunity to visit.  Tours were given by Head Gardener, Mart, who is both knowledgable and informative, and answered questions all afternoon.

This huge Spartium specimen was at its best during our visit.

The standard rose border, underplanted with lavender was still looking good, despite the heat, though a lot of the other roses had gone over, but the Mermaid rose grown over the front of the house was looking superb, and the huge Spartium at the front was smothered with flowers.  The garden is divided into several sections, including a white garden with a pond, a kitchen garden, and the main lawn surrounded by trees and shrubs.  After we’d explored the gardens, a team of helpers brought over a scrumptious selection of cakes and tea for us, which we enjoyed sitting under the trees in the orchard.

The White Garden at Lower House at Bowlhead Green.

Mrs. Harvey said that this may be the last time she opens the garden, as she has done so for 9 years now and it’s a lot of work, and so I think we were very lucky to have the chance to see it.  Many thanks to Georgina Harvey and her team.

Report Asian Hornet Sightings

I am sharing this early, to allow you to have time to share this information with your members, so they’re informed and prepared, ready for summer.  Asian Hornets have been sighted in the UK in recent years.  Why does this matter?  The Asian Hornet is highly aggressive predator of our native insects; entomologists feel that the Asian Hornet poses a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators.

Two Asian hornet nests were found in Surrey in September 2023.  The nests were subsequently destroyed by experts from DEFRA.   Keep up to date with Asian hornet sightings by clicking here.

If you think you’ve seen an Asian Hornet, take a photo if you can.  Please take care and do not disturb an active nest.   Members of the public who suspect they have found an Asian Hornet should report it to the NNSS through their online form or by emailing alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk.

A free ID sheet is available from the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat (NNSS).  Click here to view detailed pictures to help you correctly identify an Asian Hornet.

NB: Speaker feedback is private and confidential and is not to be shared with anyone other than your group’s programme secretary.
