Help Protect the RHS Wisley Garden

You may have seen in the news that the plans for improving the A3/M25 interchange in Surrey will result in the compulsory takeover of 10,000sq meters of the RHS Wisley Gardens. This will result in the destruction of over 500 important specimen trees, as well as removing the treeline that provides shelter between the busy A3 and the RHS Wisley trials field. This plan cannot be allowed to go ahead. We, as horticulturists and gardeners, must work together to persuade Highways England to change their plans to something less destructive.

How can you help?

If you’d like to join the campaign to help save this vital part of the RHS Wisley Gardens, you can get involved by signing the petition.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/en-gb/takeaction/372/679/924/

You can also read about the RHS’s reactions to their plans on their website here:

https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley/Articles/Wisley-under-threat-from-A3-plans

And lastly, you can write to the Secretary of State, the RT Hon Chris Grayling MP, and voice your objection.…

SHF Greenhills Visit Charity Update

Thanks to everyone who attended the SHF Summer Visit to Greenhills Garden on June 18th, 2017.

We’re pleased to say that the collection for the Alex Smith Charity from the SHF Members who attended totalled £800, which is a terrific achievement! Even better news is that the owners had an event afterwards, and took that total up to £10,000!

Thanks again to everyone who attended – we hope you enjoyed the trip, and we look forward to organising the trip in 2018!…

SHF GARDEN VISIT – Sunday 18th June, 2017 – GREENHILLS HOUSE

These gardens have never been opened to the public before, but now are especially for SHF clubs. Over the past few years the owners have created several gardens within a 3 acre walled garden, including a formal terrace, a rose garden, Italian garden, wildflower meadow with trees, a dry garden and much more. To the front of the house there is a woodland area with pond and tree walks. Wheelchair access but some slopes and steps.

So that we can have an idea of numbers, if club Secretaries could inform the SHF secretary of roughly the number likely to attend this would be a great help!

Full details on the event page.…

GARDEN VISIT 2017 – Sunday 18th June, 2.00 – 4.30 pm

We have persuaded the owners of Greenhills House, Tilford to open their 3 acre walled garden and grounds for us.
These gardens have never been opened to the public before, and over the past few years the owners have created several gardens within a garden, including a formal terrace, a rose garden, Italian garden, wildflower meadow with fruit trees, a dry garden and a wooded area. This is a one-off chance to see these lovely gardens – entrance is free to all members of clubs within the Surrey Horticultural Federation – but there will be a collection for the owners chosen charity.

Closer to the time we will be asking for approximate numbers so we know how many cups of tea to provide, but please put this event in your diaries and start telling your members about it.…

Could you ‘adopt’ a Vireya and help save the ‘forgotten’ rhododendron?

The RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group are running a campaign to help save the Vireya, the ‘forgotten’ rhododendron.

If you can grow an orchid, you can grow a Vireya!

Vireya Facts:

Most Vireyas are easy to grow, requiring very similar conditions to orchids. They flower at all times of the year and can be grown under glass all-year-round or moved outside for the warmer months. They come in a range of vibrant colours and many are deliciously fragrant. Once really popular, Vireyas are now at ‘critical status’ in the UK with just 300 plants representing 182 unique varieties in the hands of less than 20 growers. Only 37 varieties have duplicate plants. Vireyas need our help!

We are setting up a ‘guardian scheme’ which is open to anyone who is willing to join in and ‘adopt’ a plant to help us save vireyas for future generations to enjoy in the UK.…
