Philip is Head Gardener at Walmer Castle, Collections Coordinator for Plant Heritage in Kent. Philip began gardening at the age of four when he fell in love with exotic plants during a trip to Tresco Abbey Gardens. After teaching horticulture at a secondary school for 8 years, Philip changed direction and took up positions at notable British gardens. He is the former head gardener at Canterbury Cathedral and is now at Walmer Castle where one of his first projects has been to plant a jungle garden in the moat. He leads tours of the garden, writes and broadcasts on his specialisms, and holds three national plant collections. In 2021, he wrote the book The Jungle Garden which has received excellent reviews.
